March 17, 2020 Update, 9:00pm CST

COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus)

The Minnesota Board of Cosmetology is actively monitoring the COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) outbreak.

We’ve received guidance that hair salons, nail salons, and other spa-like businesses are included in the Governor’s Executive Order yesterday and should be closed by 5 pm today until 5 pm on Friday, March 27.

Additional Information for Cosmetology Schools:

Please do what you can to prioritize the health and safety of students and clients. We are in conversation with the Governor’s Office and other relevant parties about solutions to the challenges that the COVID-19 situation presents.

We understand that schools are working on alternative learning plans that may be in conflict with statute and/or rule.  If this is the case, we are asking that schools do the following:

  1. Schools should notify the Board by Friday, March 20, 2020 if they will be using an alternate plan and what statutes or rules may be in conflict. Please notify the Board at cosmoschools@state.mn.us.
  2. A detailed alternate learning plan needs to be submitted to the Board by March 30, 2020.
  3. The alternative learning plan should include:
    • What date the alternate learning plans start and a projected date of when the school will return to a normal schedule.
    • The topics that will be taught and the format that will be used including how many hours will be earned.
    • The names of the students that will be affected by the alternate plan.
  4. If waivers of rule are necessary for your school, we will be working to address those at our routinely scheduled Board meeting on April 27, 2020. However, that meeting may be postponed as the current COVID-19 situation is fluid.
  5. If your alternative learning plan is in conflict with state statute, please be assured we are in conversation with the Governor’s Office and other relevant parties regarding solutions to the challenges that the COVID-19 situation presents.
