4. Kudos to Bloomington United for Youth

Tri-City Partners would like to recognize the Bloomington United for Youth (BUY) coalition for its work in promoting youth assets in the community. BUY recently opened a youth-run coffee shop in Bloomington called Central Grounds. Central Grounds is a safe, substance-free place for high school youth to hang out and connect with their peers.

Central Grounds is located in the Creekside Community Center at 98th & Penn in Bloomington. This project has been youth-led from conception, and is a fine example of youth leadership in our community. Way to go, BUY!

5. Together We Stand Campaign 2012

"Who stands between kids and alcohol? We do!" This is the 2012 Together We Stand Campaign message. This annual, Tri-City Partners Coalition campaign promotes widespread support for safe and alcohol-free environments for youth during the prom, graduation and summer celebration seasons.

Plans are underway to distribute this message community wide via posters, T-shirts, postcards, window clings, and electronic media. Additionally, campaign organizers created a parent commitment card listing actions that support young people to remain alcohol-free. These actions include the following:

  • I will clearly share with my child my expectations that he/she not use alcohol or drugs.
  • I will actively supervise teens in my home.
  • I will have open communication with other parents to ensure our homes are safe and drug-free environments for teens.
  • I will secure alcohol and medications in my home to prevent easy access.
  • I will support school policies related to illegal substance use
  • I will try to have at least 5 family meals per week with my child.

If you would like to request materials and have the means to help distribute these campaign messages, please contact us. In order for this campaign to be effective, people need to see it many times in a number of different ways.

6. CADCA Research into Action: "The Economic Costs of
    Excessive Alcohol Consumption"

In the United States annually, excessive alcohol consumption accounts for an average of 79,000 deaths and 2.3 million years of potential life lost, making it the third-leading preventable cause of death in the country. This serious public health problem carries a heavy economic burden and causes a number of adverse health and social consequences, including premature death, increases in disease and injury, property damage from fire and motor vehicle crashes, alcohol-related crime, and lost productivity.

In 1998, researchers estimated that excessive alcohol consumption cost the United States $184.6 billion each year. According to a recent study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the cost of excessive alcohol consumption grew to 223.5 billion in 2006, with binge drinking accounting for over 75% of the total economic cost.

7. The Partnership at Drugfree.org launches new parent
resource to help prevent adolescent drug and alcohol abuse

The "Six Components of Effective Parenting," is a collaborative effort of The Partnership at Drugfree.org and the Philadelphia-based Treatment Research Institute. It is a research-based resource comprised of "how-to" parenting tips organized around six principles. The resource is specifically designed for parents, guardians and other caregivers who need to play an active role in helping prevent substance abuse in their families.

Research consistently shows that kids who learn a lot about the risks of drugs from their parents are up to 50 percent less likely to use than those who do not get that critical message at home.

9. Pharmacy Times: "Dextromethorphan Abuse"

In 2006, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association and the Partnership for a Drug-Free America launched a national media campaign to increase awareness and educate both parents and teenagers about the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse.

A nonaddictive cough suppressant, Dextromethorphan (DXM), was approved by the FDA in 1954 as safe and effective when used appropriately. Unfortunately, this cough suppressant commonly used by millions of individuals for cough relief is often abused by teens because of its euphoric effect. The abuse of DXM can cause serious adverse events, such as brain damage, seizure, loss of consciousness, irregular heartbeat, and even death.
