4. Monitoring the Future survey reports national teen drug use

As a Drug Free Community Grantee, the Tri-City Partners Coalition received a letter from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) regarding release of the Monitoring the Future (MTF) report. It states much of this year's data is cause for celebrating our efforts to reduce youth alcohol, tobacco and other drug use at the local level. It also emphasizes our important role to inform the community about and address existing and emerging threats.

Efforts pay off, concerns arise

In remarks about the MTF report, ONDCP's Director, Gil Kerlikowske, acknowledges effectiveness of our efforts to reduce underage alcohol use: " . . . rates of smoking and drinking are now at historic lows among teens." He also raises concern about young peoples' declining perceptions of marijuana's harm, the dangerous use of synthetic marijuana and rates of prescription drug abuse.

A call to parents

He reminds parents they are the most powerful force in their teen's lives and to take action. In an election year with pro-drug legalization political campaigns, it is especially important to talk to teens about the serious consequences of using marijuana in any form.

Regarding prescription drug abuse, he urges all Americans to keep track of prescription medications in your home and to dispose of any unused or expired medications properly.

5. Now in Spanish: PSA reminds adults about the consequences
of serving alcohol to underage youth

The TCP coalition partnered with Richfield's youth, adults, Public Safety, Officer Dave Franke and the City of Edina Communications Division to produce a Spanish language public service announcement. The public service announcement educates parents about the consequences of providing alcohol to minors. To see the PSA, click here.

9. Newsroom: "Parents Influence Teens' Decisions About Drunk
    or Drugged Driving, Study Finds"

This post sites studies indicating that teenagers whose parents drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs are far more likely to drive under the influence themselves compared with teens whose parents don't drive after using drugs or alcohol.

The post quotes SAMHSA Administrator, Pamela Hyde: "Parents play a key role in preventing drunk and drugged driving, beginning with setting a good example. Parents who drink, or drug, and drive not only put their lives and the lives of others at immediate risk, but increase the likelihood that their children will follow down this destructive path."
