Family Fun Festival-Kite Day success!

Participants having fun at Kite Day.

Human Services sponsored the 18th Annual Family Fun Festival-Kite Day Saturday, May 19, at Valley View Playfields.  An estimated 2,000 people participated in the event celebrating children. The event featured kite flying, cultural entertainment, inflatables, interactive and educational booths. 1,000 free kites and pinwheels were distributed to youth 18 years and under.

The event is designed to bring people of all ages and cultural backgrounds together.  New this year was Gaga Ball, sponsored by Park and Recreation, MN National Wildlife Refuge butterfly kite making and interactive wildlife fun facts, and sPark-It Art Cart fun projects for kids, Action for East African People sponsored a henna booth and the Shoe Bus parked on 3rd Ave. offering great shoes for little to no cost.

A highlight at the event was the Human Rights Commission’s Children’s Immigrant Art Exhibit which is art/written words created by children and youth as a way for them to cope with their fear and anxiety that they and/or their immigrant parents will be deported.  The exhibit is a way for the community to understand how children/youth are impacted and to start a conversation about immigration. The HRC partners with Public Health, the faith community and Hennepin County Library to facilitate the Immigration exhibits and related educational/awareness activities.

Additional community partners and sponsors who provided activities, volunteers and donations include: Ziegler Power Systems, Potter’s House of Jesus Christ International, Bloomington Optimist Club Youth Foundations, Home Depot, MN. Kite Society, Bloomington Police Department, Bloomington Public Health, Mac Greeman Foundation/Jump N Dunk, Mr. Kite/Craig Christensen and Leo Espinoza who was the Emcee for the day.

Mayor Gene Winstead, Councilmember Tim Busse and School Board member Jim Sorum also participated in the event.

Many positive comments were received throughout the day, noting how wonderful it was to have a free fun event for the whole family!
