Human Services received two
Certificates of Appreciation from the Minnesota Department of Revenue for
outstanding contributions and generosity to the community as an AARP Tax Aide
and VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site on April 26.
During the 2017 tax season, AARP volunteers provided free tax preparation to
approximately 750 people at Creekside Community Center.
Overall,
Minnesota sites combined filed 148,258 federal and Minnesota tax returns that
resulted in over $88 million in refunds going back to our communities and the
taxpayers who need them the most.
Human Services at Creekside Community Center will host the Fare For All program in conjunction with the Shoe Bus on Wednesday, May 16 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Fare For All is a cooperative food-buying program open to everyone – no qualifications or income restrictions. Packages have fresh fruits and vegetables as well as frozen meat items. Pay with cash, credit, debit or EBT. Fare For All works hard to ensure their food packages contain healthy staples.
The Shoe Bus is made available through a partnering program between Shoe Away Hunger and Good in the ‘Hood, where footwear is collected and turned around to provide an eco-friendly way to keep shoes out of landfills and support their efforts to provide hunger relief. Purchases of shoes are suggested donation amounts.
Shoe Away Hunger states “15% of U.S. households are facing food insecurity, and households with children facing food insecurity is at nearly 21%.” Both organizations strive to eliminate local hunger.
