Frederick Douglass Exhibit

Frederick Douglass

The Human Rights Commission will host the Frederick Douglass from Slavery to Freedom: the Journey to New York City exhibit in honor of Black History Month. The exhibit will be on display at Bloomington Civic Plaza February 8 -28 during regular building hours. 

This exhibit explores the life of Frederick Douglass and his escape to freedom. As one of the most famous men of the 19th century, Douglass not only fought to end slavery, but championed civil rights for all Americans. 


2016 Annual Report/2017 Work Plan

Chairperson Dennis Kane presented and received acceptance and approval of the 2016 Annual Report and the 2017 Commission Work Plan at the January 9 City Council meeting.

Nicolas Jenkins, one of the newly appointed commissioners is a full time student at Normandale Community College. He has an extensive background in leadership and community service. He served as student body president at DeLaSalle High School. Jenkins was also named a giving tree scholar, an award given to students who show leadership through service to the community. An award in his name is given to a student in need. 

Other recently appointed commissioners include:

  • Sheila Fishman

Success Day: Building Bridges

Commissioner Jared Leese will be participating in the 8th annual Success Day at Normandale Community College Wednesday, February 28. The day is dedicated to sessions on leadership, finance, education, and wellness. Commissioner Leese is asked to talk about his path to leadership and to provide career advice.

The nine member Human Rights Commission meets the third Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the McLeod Conference room at Bloomington Civic Plaza. The public is encouraged to attend.
