What Does MnSAFE Really Mean?

My first project upon being hired as the State Safety Coordinator was to review all of the MnSAFE management plans and provide a summary of accomplishments and challenges agencies are facing meeting their goals.  So I rolled up my sleeves and scoured the plans searching for common themes.  Three pots of coffee and 20 agency reports in, I realized that MnSAFE wasn’t so much a name, a goal, or a number.  Those things were only the parts and pieces that made up something bigger and larger than taking a number in the red and turning it to a number in the green.

I noticed in my review of the plans that MnSAFE goals have evolved from compliance related goals and shifted into a WAY of doing business, and even more importantly, a WAY of doing life.  MnSAFE goals are being written to ensure that employees go home safely to their families and are also teaching families how to be safe in their homes.  Since the MnSAFE initiative began, nearly 1,500 additional MN State Employees have gone home without injury.  All of those goals of education, awareness, and process updates are truly changing lives for the better.

Doing business the MnSAFE Way is certainly not easy.  Achieving goals takes the time and effort of many.  And after reading through agencies accomplishments and future goals, I can see hurdles still remain.  But, as a team, we continue to move in the right direction.  In fact, most agencies are on track to deliver the Governor’s goal or have made significant progress in meeting their goal.  So please stay tuned, as I plan to feed you food for thought and tips to share based on information I’ve gleamed from the MnSAFE Annual Management Plans.
