Michigan Craft Beverage Council

This is the last e-newsletter you'll receive from the Michigan Grape and Wine Industry Council. Effective October 1, we will become the Michigan Craft Beverage Council (MCBC).

Funding for Research Grants for agricultural products used in the craft beverage industry will be the highest priority for the MCBC.

Some of the Council's key promotional activities have been transitioned to other parties:

  • The Michigan Wine Collaborative will take over administration of the Vintage Michigan club and Mi-CAST (hospitality training). For more information, contact Emily Dockery, WineNotAsk@gmail.com, 248-982-0553.
  • Hour Media, which has partnered with the Council to publish the Michigan Wine Country magazine since 2005, will assume all responsibility for publishing and distribution beginning with the 2019 issue. For more information, contact Ed Peabody, epeabody@hour-media.com, 248-691-1800, ext 115.

The following will be maintained by MCBC program staff while the Council establishes priorities and defines the role they will play in supporting the craft beverage industry:

The following are on hold:

  • Michigan Grape & Wine Conference
  • Michigan Wine Competition

MDARD announces grant opportunity for rural development

Application Deadline November 14, 2018, 3:00 p.m. (EST)

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is offering a competitive grant program to promote the sustainability of land-based industries and support infrastructure benefiting rural communities in Michigan.

The Rural Development Fund grants are available for projects addressing expansion and sustainability of land-based industries; worker training related to land-based industries; and energy, transportation, communications, water, and wastewater infrastructure to benefit rural communities and micropolitan statistical areas.

Land-based industries include food and agriculture; forestry; mining, oil and gas production; and tourism. Eligible counties include those with a population no greater than 60,000 residents or micropolitian statistical areas. View a list of eligible counties.

Proposals will be evaluated through a competitive process. The maximum limit on project grant fund requests is $100,000. The total allotment of funding for the current year is approximately $1,250,000. All proposals require at least a 30% cash match. Applicants for grant funds will be asked to describe how the project will impact and produce measurable outcomes for rural communities.

Those interested in applying for the grant program should visit www.michigan.gov/mdardgrants to view the application and program guidelines.

Any additional communications concerning this Request for Proposal should be sent to mda-grants@michigan.gov. Proposals must be received at the email above no later than 3:00 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday, November 14, 2018.  Proposals received after 3:00 p.m. will not be considered.

New warning requirements for online sales and DTC shipments to California

If you sell/ship direct to consumers in California, this applies to you!

On August 30, 2018, clear and reasonable warning regulations that apply to any winery that sells and ships their products to consumers in the State of California came into effect. The new regulations require Prop 65 Alcohol Beverage Warning language to be displayed on winery websites, on or in packages containing direct-to-consumer orders sent to a California address, and in California winery tasting rooms.
