Board of State Canvassers to meet Aug. 11

 

The Board of State Canvassers will conduct a meeting at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11. It will be held remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in accordance with Executive Order 2020-154.

Included on the agenda will be:

  • Consideration of meeting minutes for approval (July 31, 2020 meeting).
  • Report on review of nominating petitions filed with the Secretary of State by candidates for the 30th Circuit Court for the November 3, 2020 General Election.

  • Consideration of challenges filed against nominating petitions submitted by candidates for the 30th Circuit Court for the November 3, 2020 General Election:

    • a.) Carol Koenig, candidate for Judge of the 30th Circuit, Regular Term Non-incumbent Position.

    • b.) Kathryn Russel, candidate for Judge of the 30th Circuit, Regular Term Non-incumbent Position.

  • Consideration of the recall petition submitted on July 28, 2020 against Governor Gretchen Whitmer by Chad Baase. The reasons for recall printed in the heading of the petition are as follows:

    • For signing Executive Order 2020-04, Declaration of State of Emergency, on March 10, 2020 and for also signing Executive Order 2020-67, Declaration of state of emergency under the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act, 1945 PA 302, on April 30, 2020.

  • Consideration of the recall petition submitted on July 28, 2020 against Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II by Chad Baase. The reasons for recall printed in the heading of the petition are as follows:

    • FOR SIGNING HOUSE BILL 4044 INTO LAW ON NOVEMBER 21, 2019 WHILE GOVERNOR GRETCHEN WHITMER WAS IN ISRAEL.

  • Consideration of the recall petition submitted on July 29, 2020 against Attorney General Dana Nessel. The reasons for recall printed in the heading of the petition are as follows:

    • For signing a letter with the greeting, “Dear Colleagues,” dated May 4, 2020, Re: Executive Orders 2020-69 & 2020-70 with the following paragraph; The legislature has deemed this to be a “sufficiently broad power of action in the exercise of the police power of the state to provide adequate control over persons and conditions doing such periods of impending or actual public crisis or disaster.” MCL 10.32. In addition, the provisions of the EPGA are to “be broadly construed to effectuate this purpose.” Id. 

  • Consideration of the recall petition submitted on July 28, 2020 against Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson by Chad Baase. The reasons for recall printed in the heading of the petition are as follows:

    • For signing Executive Order 2020-04, Declaration of State of Emergency, on March 10, 2020 and for also signing Executive Order 2020-67, Declaration of state of emergency under the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act, 1945 PA 302, on April 30, 2020.

  • Such other and further business as may be properly presented to the board.

Attending and speaking at a Board of State Canvassers meeting

A person may address the board on any agenda item at the end of the meeting. A person who wishes to address the board on an agenda item at the time the item is being discussed must submit a written request to the chairperson of the board prior to the opening of the meeting. Persons addressing the board are allotted three minutes. Members of the general public may submit written comments using the “Chat” feature at the link above, or via email at Elections@Michigan.gov.
