An overwhelming majority (72%) reported their tax burden to be “about right” when considering the government services they receive compared to just 55% in 2008. Ottawa County has the fifth lowest millage rate in the state when compared to all 83 Michigan counties. On average, a resident pays about $270 annually for Ottawa County government services, such as law enforcement, courts, public health, record keeping and many others.

Residents also report a sense of loyalty to the County with 77% reporting that Ottawa County is a better place to live than other areas in the region. Proximity to Lake Michigan and nature plus access to urban centers are cited often as reasons for making Ottawa County home. The complete Citizen Survey report is online.

“We are once again pleased with the results and attribute them to the team of over 1,000 employees, elected officials and judges in this organization,” said Al Vanderberg, Ottawa County Administrator

Ottawa County implemented programs to improve customer service in 2012, along with efforts to increase communication, cultivate creativity and develop cultural intelligence.

This was the seventh in a series of biennial studies that began in 2006. The questionnaire, conducted by Epic-MRA, asked residents to rank government goals, handling of finances, perception of tax burden, as well as many other customer satisfaction sentiments.
