Ottawa County joined several other Michigan counties experiencing flood damage, notifying Michigan officials of the local State of Emergency. The declaration read:

On 02/23/2018, the County of Ottawa sustained widespread or severe damage; injury or loss of life or property caused by flooding caused by heaving rainfall and snowmelt.   As a result of this situation, the following conditions exist: flooded homes and roadways, damage to utilities, and public health concerns related to flood damage.

Therefore; as Ottawa County Board of Commissioners, Chairperson of Ottawa County, in accordance with Section 10 of Act 390. P.A. 1976, as amended, I hereby declare that a "State of Emergency" exists therein, that the response and recovery aspects of the emergency operations plan have been activated and that local resources are being utilized to the fullest possible extent.

A county declaration is the first step to accessing emergency resources that could become available to assist in recovery efforts.
