Congratulations on your decision to retire! We have received your online retirement application. If you haven’t already, please send all required proofs along with the Retirement Confirmation and Checklist provided to you in miAccount. The checklist can be found by clicking on Apply for Retirement after you log in to miAccount. Photocopies of your proofs can be mailed to: Office of Retirement Services, P.O. Box 30171, Lansing, MI 48909 or faxed to (517) 322-1116. Do not send originals as they cannot be returned.

When you log into miAccount your status will read as Pending until we have completed the initial review and you are closer to your retirement date. Our review may include a need to collect information from your employer closer to your termination date. You can expect to see changes to your status beginning in May or early June. Rest assured – we know your retirement date is important to you and we will take care of you.  We will review your earned service credit and any service purchases you have in progress. If you enrolled in insurances, we will notify the insurance carrier and the carrier will mail cards directly to you.

Once we complete these steps, you will see your status change to Calculating in miAccount and if there are documents missing from your application, you will be able to see specifically which ones we still need. We will also email you with a request for those specific documents. Lastly, we will mail you a Benefit Application Summary letter. It is imperative that you review your Benefit Application Summary letter carefully as it provides the details of your pension and insurances. If there are any concerns, send us a message on the Message Board right away!

Insurance cards can take 3 – 4 weeks to arrive in the mail after we have notified the carrier. However, your insurance begins on your retirement effective date. If you do not have your cards before your effective date, you will want to keep copies of any receipts to submit to the carriers for reimbursement.

If you have questions, log in to the miAccount message board at www.michigan.gov/orsmiaccount where you can get secure, direct access to one of our customer service representatives. While you’re in miAccount, make sure your email address and contact information is correct so you can continue to receive the latest information from ORS.

The team at ORS looks forward to providing you with a smooth transition from active service into retirement. Congratulations!

Sincerely,
