Crime Alert for period ending April 10, 2013

 Assaults

Auntie Anne’s, 412 W Fourteen Mile, 3/30/13, 6:42 pm: Troy Officers were dispatched to a fight in progress. When officers arrived the fight had been broken up. Officers interviewed the involved parties. Two women from Eastpointe, 19 and 22-years-old respectively, state they ordered pretzels and left the area after receiving their food. One woman started eating and realized she had been given the wrong pretzel dip. The women returned to the store and were told they would have to pay for another dip as they had already consumed a portion of the one they had initially received. An argument ensued and the women stated an employee threw a dip at them. One of the woman and a nearby security guard were struck in the face and chests with nacho cheese. The women attempted to climb over the counter and a scuffle ensued; a machine was knocked over and broken. The 22-year-old sustained a minor injury. The case is being reviewed by the Troy City Attorney for possible charges.

Old Navy, 1221 Coolidge Hwy, 3/30/13, 7:50 pm: Troy Officers were dispatched to the store on report of a physical altercation between two female shoppers. Store employees had separated the women and the fight was over when officers arrived. Officers interviewed the women, both of whom claim the other started the fight. The women know each other and apparently do not get along. They happened to run into each other in the store. Punching and hair pulling ensued. One woman grabbed a metal bar from a sales rack to defend herself. Both women sustained very minor injuries. Following an investigation, Troy Officers arrested both combatants, a 28-year-old from Highland Park and a 30-year-old from Warren. They were charged with “Assault and Battery” and “Disorderly Conduct.”

Auto/Vehicle Thefts

2000 block of Lovington, 3/27/13 – 3/28/13, 7 pm – 6:30 am: The complainant’s 1999 Honda Civic was stolen from the apartment complex parking lot. 

1000 block of John R, 3/27/13 – 3/28/13, 5 - 6pm: The complainant’s 1996 Honda Civic was stolen from the west parking lot. 

Credit, Check, Identity Theft, Other Fraud

Kohl’s, 500 John R, 3/27/13, 3:33 pm: Loss Prevention reports that a woman attempting to purchase $833.03 worth of merchandise told the salesclerk she didn’t have the credit card and asked that the account be looked up using a social security number she provided. The clerk eventually denied the transaction based on inconsistencies in the name and address on the account. Troy Officers made contact with the woman and questioned her about the account. She claimed the account belonged to her aunt’s boyfriend. The real account holder was contacted and stated she had never heard of the woman and did not give anyone permission to use her account. Troy Officers arrested the 21-year-old Detroit woman for “Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card.”

6000 block of Forest Park, 3/26/13, 10:00 pm: The complainant was contacted by Chase Bank and asked if he had ordered a new credit card and requested the card be sent to an address in Brooklyn, NY. When they complainant said no, he was advised that someone had called and provided the complainant’s name and social security and made the request claiming that they had lost their wallet.

1000 block of John R, 3/28/13, 10:29 am: When the complainant attempted to file her federal income tax return she was advised that someone had already filed a claim using her name.

2000 block of Whitehall, 3/28/13, 11:04 am: When the complainant received a notice from a collection agency she learned that someone had used her identity to fraudulently open a Sprint account. The account has an outstanding balance of $1,191.07.

 Domestic/Family Trouble

Troy Officers responded to 6 incidents involving domestic disputes or family troubles during this reporting period.  On-scene investigation of these incidents did not result in evidence of crimes being committed; however, Officers were required to take non-enforcement actions to either mediate the situation or keep the peace.  Readers should be aware that although these incidents did not result in arrest or prosecution, they do represent significant law enforcement resources in terms of time, on-scene investigation, potential relocation of disputants, referrals to support agencies, peace keeping, as well as detective and prosecutorial review.

Drugs/Narcotics

Rochester & I-75, 3/31/13, 12:15 pm: A woman flagged down a Troy officer and pointed out a vehicle that had rear-ended her car and then failed to stop following the accident. The officer stopped the suspect vehicle and made contact with the driver. The 44-year-old Rochester Hills woman stated she had not stopped because she knew she was not supposed to be driving. The officer checked her status and found that her driver’s license was suspended (24 suspensions) and she had outstanding warrants for her arrest issued by six different law enforcement agencies. Additionally, she was found to be in possession of a controlled substance (prescription muscle relaxer). She admitted she did not have a prescription for the drug. She was arrested for “Possession of a Controlled Substance,” “Driving While License Suspended” and “Fail to Stop and identify at an Accident.” No one was injured in the accident.

Driving Under Influence of Alcohol/Drugs

Stephenson Hwy & E Maple, 3/28/13, 1:54 am: A Troy Officer stopped a vehicle that he had observed speeding (65 miles-per-hour) and failing to stop for a red light in a turn-around. The driver had very glassy eyes and there was a strong aroma of intoxicants coming from her vehicle. The 20-year-old Warren woman failed sobriety tests. She was arrested for “Operating While Intoxicated” and breath test results were .19%.

I-75 & Adams, 3/28/13, 12:03 pm: Troy Officers were dispatched to the area when a concerned citizen reported a suspected drunk driver. An officer located the vehicle, confirmed it was being driven erratically and performed a traffic stop. The driver had slurred speech and very constricted pupils. The 31-year-old Davison man stated he had taken a prescription controlled substance used to treat addiction to opiates. He had poor balance and was unsteady on his feet. After failing sobriety tests, he was arrested for “Operating under the Influence of Drugs.” A blood test was administered and results are pending.

E Big Beaver & Livernois, 3/29/13, 11:08 pm: A Troy Officer stopped a vehicle for speeding and improper lane usage. The vehicle smelled of intoxicants and marijuana and the driver had slurred speech and red, watery eyes. Marijuana, a marijuana pipe and a half full bottle of vodka were found in the vehicle. The 22-year-old West Bloomfield man failed sobriety tests was arrested for “Operating While Intoxicated,” “Open Intoxicants in a Motor Vehicle,” “Possession of Marijuana” and “Possession of Narcotic Paraphernalia.” A blood test was administered and results are pending.

Crooks & W Maple, 3/30/13, 1:42 am: Troy Officers observed a vehicle approach a red light at a high rate of speed. It did not appear that the vehicle was going to stop for the red light. The vehicle came to an abrupt stop, well past the stop bar and partially in the intersection. Officers stopped the vehicle and noted that the driver smelled of intoxicants, had slurred speech and very bloodshot/glassy eyes. The 23-year-old Livonia woman had poor balance and failed sobriety tests. She was arrested for “Operating While Intoxicated.” Breath test results were .11%. 

I-75 & Crooks, 3/31/13, 3:31 am: A Troy Officer observed a vehicle that was unable to maintain its lane of travel and was repeatedly crossing lane markers. At one point, the vehicle almost side swiped another vehicle forcing the other vehicle to swerve in order to avoid being struck. The officer stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver, who smelled of intoxicants, had very bloodshot/glassy eyes and slurred speech. The 40-year-old Detroit man had poor balance and failed sobriety tests. He was arrested for “Operating While Intoxicated” and breath test results were .16%.

 Home Invasions

2000 block of Athena, 3/29/13 – 3/31/13, 5 – 9:45 pm: Residents returned home after being out of town and discovered two exterior doors standing open. A screen had been cut out of a window. The home had been entered and cameras, jewelry and a laptop computer were stolen.

3000 block of Timbercrest, 3/28/13 – 3/31/13, 7:20 pm: The home was broken into while the resident was out of town. Entry was made by prying open a sliding glass door. Jewelry was stolen.

Larcenies 

Sears Portrait Studios, 300 W Fourteen Mile, 3/31/13, 4:30 pm: An employee reports that her Apple iPhone was stolen from a sales counter.

Larcenies from Autos

Planet Fitness, 288 John R, 3/28/13, 10:55 am – 11:20 am: Complainant reports that the driver’s side rear passenger window on her Chevrolet Malibu was broken and her purse was stolen. The purse contained the complainant’s checkbook, credit and debit cards, and wallet.

Buffalo Wild Wings, 1873 E Big Beaver, 3/28/13, 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm: The complainant reports that three center wheel caps were stolen from his Cadillac Escalade. 

Mike Savoie Chevrolet, 1900 W Maple, 3/30/13, 6:10 pm: Troy Officers responded to the business after a witness reported hearing the sound of a car jack and observing a man loading tires into a vehicle. A Madison Heights Police Officer monitoring the situation by radio observed a car matching the description of the suspect vehicle and pulled it over. There were two wheels in the backseat of the suspect vehicle. Following an investigation, Troy Officers arrested both occupants of the vehicle, a 26-year-old male from Shelby Township and a 28-year-old male from Sterling Heights. They were charged with “Larceny from Auto.”

Granite City, 699 W Big Beaver, 3/30/13, 6:10 pm – 11 pm: Complainant reports that the right rear passenger window was broken out of her Buick Lacrosse. A laptop computer and clothing were stolen.

Malicious Destruction of Property

2000 block of Stratford, 3/27/13, 7:30 am – 6:30 pm: Complainant reports that a rock was thrown through the driver’s side window of his Ford Taurus. 13-9562

Retail Fraud 

Sears, 300 W Fourteen Mile, 3/27/13, 3:47 pm: A 41-year-old male from Canton entered the shoe department and tried on a pair of boots.  He put his old tennis shoes in the boot box and wore the boots out of the store. He was issued a citation for “Retail Fraud III.” The retail value of the boots was $75.   

Kohl’s, 500 John R, 3/30/13, 1:24 pm: A 19-year-old female from Windsor, Ontario was arrested for “Retail Fraud II” after shoplifting $104.98 worth of merchandise. She had concealed two pieces of jewelry and two phone cases in her purse.

JCPenney, 700 W Fourteen Mile, 3/30/13, 2:45 pm: A 56-year-old male was arrested for “Retail Fraud II” after shoplifting four girl’s dresses. The Detroit resident removed the dresses from their hangers and concealed the dresses in the front of his pants. The total retail value of the stolen clothing is $75. 

Suspicious Incidents

3000 block of Meadowbrook, 3/28/13, 3:23 am: Resident called police after hearing someone knock on a window. Officers checked the area but did not locate anyone.

2000 block of Garry, 3/29/13, 11:39 pm: Complainant reports that his wife woke him up saying that she thought she heard someone trying the door handle on their rear sliding door. When the complainant investigated he found the sliding screen door open about ten inches and an exterior light bulb had been unscrewed. A K-9 track was attempted but no suspects were located.

Vandalism

5000 block of Houghten, 3/30/13, 10:53 pm: Complainant reports she heard something hit the front window of her home. When she went outside to investigate she discovered that her house and vehicle had been “egged”. 

Welfare Checks

Troy Officers responded to 2 incidents involving persons with emotional or psychological issues and assisted with transport to a hospital for evaluation and possible commitment.
