Message From the Mayor

Pope Francis was an inspirational guest of the nation late last month. His message enriched people of every religious and political persuasion. His appeal to our nature’s highest instincts underlined core values that are both timeless and indispensable:
  • caring for the poor
  • welcoming the stranger
  • comforting the afflicted
  • being mindful of not harming the planet we all share and
  • engaging in civil discourse with one another
The sincerity of his life and the power of his personal presence leave our land uplifted and energized.

Berkley welcomes October with change and opportunity. After 14 years as our city manager, Jane Bais-DiSessa has been asked to bring her management skills to the city of Pontiac. She has known for several years that her next professional goal was to manage a larger city. The state-imposed emergency financial manager has completed his task in Pontiac, and that provided the opening for the challenge Jane has sought.

We thank Jane for shepherding Berkley through the recession years and for keeping our city on a solid financial footing. We wish her well as she faces the challenge ahead.

Meanwhile, the search for a new city manager begins. This will be a careful and extensive process that will likely take some amount of time to complete. I have appointed an ad hoc committee comprised of Mayor Pro Tem Dan Terbrack, Councilmember Steve Baker, and Councilmember Jack Blanchard.

This search committee will utilize the professional services of the Michigan Municipal League (MML) who specialize in providing assistance to member cities in such searches. The precise details of the process and the specific timeline are being finalized and I am confident the outstanding reputation of the city will ensure significant interest in this position.

The weather, too, is likely to change as October unfolds, giving us the majestic autumn colors that are a treat in Michigan. The month ends with the celebration of Halloween, or as it was once called “All Hallow’s Eve”. Youngsters, on the other hand, think of it as candy harvest night! From a national economic perspective, costumes and candy alone are an $8 billion proposition.

If you choose to observe Halloween, it is good to keep in mind that children often dart around in the darkness, motivated by the single-minded quest for treats.  Let us all enjoy this neighborly night in safety.

Public Works

We encourage all residents to sign up for the Berkley email updates.  In addition to receiving the monthly City newsletter, residents will be sent alerts related to water main breaks, road construction and snow removal.  Homeowners can sign up on-line at: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MIOEBERKLEY/subscriber/new?category_id=MIOEBERKLEY_C1

Beginning October through November, leaves and yard debris may be raked to the curb or placed in yard waste bags at no charge to the residents.  Yard waste bags (50 lbs. limit) will be collected on garbage days and the street debris will be removed by DPW staff on a rotational basis, depending on workload.

The last compost delivery for 2015 is still available for residents (no contractors).  The remaining stockpile is located just outside the DPW yard on Beverly between Bacon and Phillips.

90 gallon trash toters (cans) can be purchased from the DPW for $60 each.  These are wheeled cans with attached lids that are dumped mechanically by City refuse hauler.

Residents no longer need an appointment to drop off hazardous household waste or electronics at the SOCRRA facility in Troy.

Any homeowners leaving the City during the winter months are encouraged to contact the DPW to temporarily change the mailing address for utility bills and shut off the water service at the curb to limit the possibility of pipes freezing.

Any questions on the above, please call the Berkley DPW at 248-658-3490.
