Following County Executive Dave Coulter’s presentation on the recommended budget for fiscal years (FY) 2027-2029 at the July 16 Board meeting, the Finance Committee will kick off its annual budget hearings on Tuesday, Aug. 4. During this series of meetings, representatives from departments around the county will fill the committee in on their priorities for the coming year and give updates on previous budget allocations. At the July 16 Board meeting, a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Smith Charles was approved opposing a proposed Michigan constitutional amendment. The amendment would require presenting documentary proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, when registering to vote and casting a ballot. The time and financial requirements of acquiring these and other supporting documents may be a significant barrier to many and could prevent up to 1.1 million eligible voters in Michigan from being able to carry out this essential civic right.
Last week, Chair Woodward and Commissioner Powell spoke at a press conference showcasing the latest updates in the county’s redevelopment of its future offices in downtown Pontiac. This development included the beginning of aboveground construction and installation of the first precast wall panel for the project’s south parking deck. The Board approved the $66.15M investment in two parking decks late last year. Construction on the north deck will begin following site preparation.

The Board’s Finance Committee will hear from 22 county departments this month as part of its annual budget hearings. Presentations from these departments help shape the county’s expenditures for fiscal year 2027 and beyond.

- Run or walk with your dog or cat during the Oakland County Parks Tails & Trails 5K or Cat Walk 1K at Independence Oaks County Park beginning at 10 a.m. on Aug. 16. The event includes vendors, activities and family fun zone, and funds raised from registration benefit Great Lakes Dog Rescue and Teacher’s Pet.
- Enjoy family-friendly fun, such as inflatables and giant yard games, at the Family Market Day on Aug. 8 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Oakland County Farmers Market in Waterford. Residents who are enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) for Women, Infants and Children, and those with Michigan Bridge Cards can receive a $5 coupon to purchase fresh produce from local vendors.
- Oakland County has retained its Aaa and AAA bond ratings from Moody’s Ratings and S&P Global Ratings for the recently issued Clinton-Oakland Sewage Disposal System Capital Improvement Bonds. These ratings demonstrate Oakland Couty’s fiscal responsibility and ensure investment in critical infrastructure that keeps costs low for taxpayers.
