In celebration of Black History Month, the fifth annual Black Excellence Awards were presented at the Feb. 19 meeting. This year, nominations from the community reached a record high, and the final recipients were selected by a panel of commissioners for their accomplishments and the many ways they make an impact on the community.
This year’s winners are:
- DaQuetta Baylor-Boothe (Pontiac)
- Kevandre “Dre” Thompson (Southfield)
- Gregory Glenn (Southfield)
- Sanya L. Weston (Northville)
- Justen Daniels (Southfield)
Learn more about the recipients at the Oakland County Blog and see the highlights on Facebook.
At the Feb. 19 meeting, the Board approved a resolution that transfers the Aviation & Transportation Division, which manages the three Oakland County airports, from the Economic Development Department into a standalone Aviation Department. Oversight from the Airport Committee will continue, and manager Cheryl Bush will be reclassified as Aviation Director, but no major changes will result.
During its Feb. 19 meeting, the Board approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Spisz (District 5) to sponsor the Peer-to-Peer Mentorship Program offered by the nonprofit 42 Strong Foundation. The program matches older students with younger peers in a supportive mentor relationship that’s designed to foster emotional intelligence, connection, resilience and community engagement. It honors the legacy of Tate Myre by encouraging uplifting mentor-mentee relationships and promotes student connections to family, peers, school and community.
