Dear Immunization Partners,

Please share the following information with staff and colleagues.

In August 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved an inactivated tick-born encephalitis (TBE) vaccine (Ticovac) for use in persons aged ≥1 year. On February 23, 2023, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) approved the recommendations which were then adopted by the CDC Director.

The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), published on November 10, 2023, summarizes the epidemiology of and risks for infection with TBE virus, provides information on the immunogenicity and safety of TBE vaccine, and summarizes the recommendations of the ACIP for use of TBE vaccine among U.S. travelers and laboratory workers.

Newly approved ACIP TBE vaccination recommendations:

  • TBE vaccination is recommended for laboratory workers with potential for exposure to TBE virus.
  • TBE vaccination is recommended for persons who are moving or traveling to a TBE-endemic area and will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary.
  • TBE vaccine may be considered for persons traveling or moving to a TBE-endemic area who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found. The decision to vaccinate should be based on an assessment of their planned activities and itinerary, risk factors for a poorer medical outcome, and personal perception and tolerance of risk.

You can find the Michigan version of the vaccine information statement (VIS) on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) website. Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) (michigan.gov)

Thank you for all you do to protect Michiganders from vaccine-preventable diseases.
