IMPORTANT-New Recommendations on the Use of COVID-19 Monovalent Novavax Vaccine as a Booster

This email is being sent to VFC, Non-VFC and Covid-19 Providers in Oakland County, Michigan by the Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) Immunization Action Plan (IAP)

Dear Immunization Partners,

On October 19, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided guidance on the newly amended Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the COVID-19 monovalent Novavax vaccine for use as a booster dose. The Interim Clinical Considerations were updated to include the recommendations as follows:

  • Guidance for use of a monovalent Novavax COVID-19 booster dose in people ages 18 years and older in limited situations:
    • If unable to receive an mRNA vaccine as a result of an allergy to a component of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.
    • If unable to receive an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine as a result of a history of a severe allergic reaction (such as anaphylaxis) after a previous dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.
    • If there is a lack of availability of an mRNA vaccine.
    • May also choose to receive a Novavax monovalent booster if they are unwilling to receive mRNA vaccines and would otherwise not receive a booster dose.
  • Spacing of booster dose, if eligible under above limited situations:
    • People ages 18 years and older who completed primary vaccination using any COVID-19 vaccine and have not received any previous booster dose(s) may receive a monovalent Novavax booster dose at least 6 months after completion of the primary series.
