Dear Immunization Partners,
On January 6, 2022 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated the Interim Clinical Considerations, along with some of their clinical handouts, and defining fully vaccinated and up-to-date. Here is a brief overview of the changes.
Interim Clinical Considerations
- Updated guidance for use of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 as a booster for ages 12 through 17 years of age. (See chart below)
- Updated guidance for interval between administration of last primary dose and booster dose. Recipients of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine primary series (including those who received two doses of different mRNA vaccine products) should receive a single booster dose at least 5 months after the last dose administered. (See chart below)

- Updated guidance for use of an additional primary dose for moderately or severely immunocompromised for ages 5 through 11 years who received a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine primary series.
-
Moderately or severely immunocompromisedpeople who received an initial mRNA COVID-19 vaccine primary series should receive an additional primary dose of the same mRNA COVID-19 vaccine as was administered for the primary series at least 28 days after completion of the initial 2-dose series. An additional dose should be administered as follows:
- Pfizer-BioNTech:
- 30µg in a volume of 0.3mL (purple or gray cap formulation) for people ages 12 years and older
- 10µg in a volume of 0.2mL (orange cap formulation) for people ages 5 through 11 years
- Moderna: 100µg in a volume of 0.5mL for people ages 18 years and older
- Pfizer-BioNTech:
- Updated recommendations for people who received COVID-19 vaccines outside the United States that are not FDA-authorized or approved.
- There are four scenarios outlined in this section. Click here for further guidance.
Defining Fully Vaccinated and Up to Date
A person is considered fully vaccinated with vaccines against COVID-19 infection 2 or more weeks after receipt of the second dose in a 2-dose mRNA vaccine series (Pfizer or Moderna) or 2 or more weeks after receipt of a single dose of the Janssen (Johnson and Johnson) COVID-19 Vaccine.
CDC recommends that people remain up to date with their vaccines, which includes additional doses for individuals who are immunocompromised or booster doses at regular time points. Individuals who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should get an additional primary shot and a booster shot.
Ensure you are optimally protected against COVID-19 by getting vaccinated and staying up to date with a booster dose.
