As reported by the state today, we are currently at 68.8% vaccination coverage for residents 16 years and older who have received at least their first dose.  There are still many individuals who have questions or are uncertain about COVID-19 vaccination. 

To get out the most up-to-date information, the State of Michigan is hosting a series of virtual town halls about the COVID-19 vaccine through MDHHS's Facebook page. Individuals will hear about the safety and efficacy of the vaccine, and will be able to get answers to common questions.

Yesterday’s town hall addressed information for parents and families.  On July 22, the focus will be vaccination of young adults.  Each session includes relevant experts such as physicians. We have a little further to go to meet our 70% goal and we can get there with your help.  We are still offering our incentive program – a $50 gift card for ANY Oakland County resident getting their first dose until Oakland County reaches 70% vaccination rate or all gift cards have been distributed, whichever comes first.

COVID-19 vaccination for people with underlying conditions

Adults of any age with certain underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19. COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for and can be administered to most people with underlying medical conditions.

Severe illness means that a person with COVID-19 may need:

• Hospitalization
• Intensive care
• A ventilator to help them breathe
• Or they may even die

If you have a medical condition, speak with your healthcare provider about steps you can continue to take to manage your health and risks.  Preventive measures for COVID-19 (including vaccination, wearing a mask and social distancing) are important, especially if you are older or have multiple or severe health conditions. You can learn about vaccine recommendations, including how medical conditions and other factors inform recommendations, here.

A list of high-risk medical conditions that put people at increased risk for severe COVID-19-associated illness is updated routinely as new data become available.

A $50 gift card incentive* is available to any Oakland County resident receiving their first COVID-19 vaccine until our 70% goal is met.

In addition, Governor Whitmer announced the state’s “MI Shot to Win Sweepstakes,” which is a lottery-style raffle, and will offer a total payout of $5 million, as well as nine scholarships valued at $55,000 a piece. Many other organizations and businesses throughout Michigan are also offering giveaways during COVID-19 vaccine clinics.

*Legal notice: This incentive will be offered until Oakland County reaches 70% vaccination rate or until all gift cards have been distributed, whichever comes first. Persons under 18 are eligible to receive a vaccine and a gift card with the consent of their parent or legal guardian. This is not a lottery, and the COVID-19 vaccine is provided free of charge. No person will be asked to pay any money in exchange for the COVID-19 vaccine or the $50 gift card. There is no element of chance involved in this incentive.
