(U//FOUO) OK2SAY and the MIOC are aware of voicemails containing threats sent to multiple K-12 schools across Michigan. The voicemail received by multiple schools appears to be a computer-generated voice claiming that multiple explosive devices have been planted inside the school. The voicemail also warns that if they devices are moved or tampered with, the caller will come and “shoot every student in this school”.
(U//FOUO) At this time OK2SAY and the MIOC are aware of five high schools receiving shooting and bombing threats. The schools are located in Gogebic, Gratiot, Lake, Saginaw, and St. Clair counties.
(U//FOUO) Based on the geographic spread of the calls and the nature of the threat, OK2SAY and the MIOC believe these calls to likely be hoax threats designed to elicit a response from law enforcement and local school authorities, similar to previous threats received in 2023.
(U) If your jurisdiction is impacted by this type of activity, it is recommended: • Respond as you deem appropriate • Obtain a recording of the call if possible • Report Details of the call to local law enforcement and the Michigan Intelligence Operations Center (MIOC) Suspicious Activity Reporting portal.
(U) Prior Similar Incidents
(U//FOUO) Education institutions in Michigan at both the K-12 levels and higher education have previously fallen victim to false threats to specific buildings and schools. A nationwide campaign of false threats to schools targeted Michigan in 2023, with multiple schools being the subject of active shooter threats that prompted significant law enforcement events. These swatting calls were determined to be part of a coordinated campaign targeting K-12 education facilities nationwide.
