Dear Educator, |

The National Academy of Engineering is delighted to announce this year’s annual EngineerGirl Writing Contest on Engineering for Your Community. This is an opportunity for students in grades 3-12 to learn more about engineering and win cash prizes (up to $500). The contest challenges students to write a plea convincing others to improve their community’s infrastructure. The contest description on the EngineerGirl website describes the different systems of infrastructure needed and how one might go through the engineering design process to work through identifying the problems and coming up with the solutions. We have also included the following additional resources that we hope will make it easier for educators like you to help students make the most of this opportunity and stimulate engagement in engineering. Thousands of students, both boys and girls, have submitted essays to the contest over the years, with winners earning monetary prizes and the honor of having their essays published on the EngineerGirl website. The contest can be an opportunity for out-of-school work, or it can be part of a classroom project. There have been some wonderful winning essays in past contests, and we are certain this year will be no exception. The entry deadline for the 2018 contest is February 1, 2018. If you have questions or would like to know more, we would be delighted to hear from you!
Warm regards, The EngineerGirl Team EngineerGirl@nae.edu
