The 2024 Macomb County recommended budget was presented to the Board of Commissioners on Thursday, October 5 by County Executive Mark Hackel. For the third year in a row, the budget exceeds $1 billion, with almost $300 million in General Fund expenses and a $110 million fund balance. Now that the proposed budget is in hand, the Commissioners have started to publicly examine the recommendations and hear from each department what their needs are for the upcoming year.
Priorities outlined for the upcoming year's budget include: public safety and public health, capital infrastructure, road construction/maintenance and community action programs.

The Macomb County Board of Commissioners Student Government Day Program serves as an opportunity to provide our community’s youth the opportunity to learn the purpose and mechanics of county-level government and be able to participate in a way to further their understanding of how local government works. Students who recognize and understand this will become more informed and involved citizens and voters.
The first part of this program is an essay contest. This is open to all Macomb County students at public and private schools in grades 9th-12th. Essays must adhere to the 2023/2024 essay topic and be submitted no later than Friday, December 16, 2023. No late entries will be accepted.
Once all submissions have been carefully reviewed, the Commissioners will choose their favorite essays and invite those students to participate in a Student Government Day at the Macomb County Board of Commissioners office in downtown Mount Clemens in mid to late January 2024. Exact date and tentative schedule will be available by the essay deadline.

The Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce the continuation of the Macomb County Casual Day Charitable Collections Program for 2024. With department leader permission, participating employees may wear casual clothing to work on Fridays/designated days if they donate at least one dollar. Departments must collect and send their donations to the Board office in a timely fashion. Written requests for 2024 charities must be received by the Board office no later than Friday, December 9, 2023. All requests must be on letterhead from a designated official of the charity and accompanied by a current 501(c)(3) certificate and solicitation license from the State Attorney General’s Office. Please note full criteria and guidelines.
The Casual Day program was first adopted by resolution of the Board of Commissioners in 1994 and it has continued to grow thanks to Macomb County employees' commitment to helping others. Since the program’s inception, nearly $713,000 has been generously donated to various charities.

Exciting news for the 2023/2024 program year! The Michigan Green Schools Program is now housed under the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). As one of the largest participating counties, the Macomb County Green Schools Program will still be handled at the local level.
One change Macomb County will be transitioning to is utilizing the Michigan Green Schools Online Portal for application submission. Use of this portal should make the application process easier and more efficient for schools. For the 2023/2024 School Year, participation in the application portal is OPTIONAL, but encouraged. You may still submit a PDF application, available here on our website, for the 2023/2024 program year. A step-by-step guide of the online application portal is also available below.
The online portal will open on January 1, 2024, when the application submission period begins. The application period will end on March 3, 2024, to include the weekend for submission, for both portal application submissions and PDF application submissions.
PLEASE NOTE: The Macomb County Green Schools Program is still functioning at the local level. There have been no changes to the way applications are reviewed or approved. All applications submitted through the online portal will be reviewed by the same panel as PDF submissions. Any questions please reach out to Laura Murphy, Macomb County Green Schools Coordinator.
