Two years of COVID-19 vaccination – December 2022 marked two years since the first COVID-19 vaccine was administered in the U.S. Although too many lives have been lost to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, vaccination has helped prevent millions of hospitalizations and saved millions of lives. According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Dashboard, over 63% of Macomb County residents age 6 months plus have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and over 59% have received at least two doses. Only 35% of Macomb County residents age 5+ have received a booster dose.
Stay up to date on your vaccines to protect yourselves, your loved ones, and your community against COVID-19. As with other vaccine-preventable diseases, you are protected best from COVID-19 when you stay up to date with the recommended vaccinations, including recommended boosters.
Get an updated bivalent booster at least 2 months after completing your primary series or last booster. If you’ve had COVID-19, you may delay getting your booster by 3 months since your symptoms ended.

Children and COVID-19 vaccination – Medical and public health experts, including the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend that children and adolescents age 6 months and older get a COVID-19 vaccine to help protect them from contracting and spreading the virus. The vaccine is the best way to protect children from becoming severely ill or having long-lasting health impacts due to COVID-19. While children and adolescents are typically at lower risk than adults of becoming severely ill or hospitalized from COVID-19, it is still possible.
Another important reason for children to get the COVID-19 vaccine is to protect their friends, family, and the broader community from the spread of the virus. The higher the vaccination rates, the lower the chances that the coronavirus will mutate into additional variants.
