Throughout the early 20th century, dozens of Michigan communities constructed public libraries through funding provided nationwide by industrialist Andrew Carnegie. Learn about the history of the Carnegie library program and its impact in Michigan. Explore examples of Michigan Carnegie Libraries, including many who continue to serve their communities today.

Library of Michigan Labor Day Holiday Closing
The Library of Michigan will be closed from Saturday, August 31 through Monday, September 2 for the Labor Day Holiday. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday, September 3. All reference questions and library card applications will be processed during the week after reopening.

"We Want Your Yearbooks" Campaign
The Library of Michigan is expanding its initiative to collect yearbooks from throughout the state. For several years, the library has actively accepted Michigan yearbooks of high schools, colleges/universities, and other post-secondary institutions (e.g. nursing schools, business schools, vocational/technical schools). With the school year starting, the yearbook collection project is expanding to include a social media campaign and downloadable/printable posters that libraries and historical organizations are encouraged to use to publicize the project.
Look for information about the "We Want Your Yearbooks" campaign by going to Michigan.gov/LibraryGift. This is where the downloadable/printable posters are available as well as an FAQ section about the project. Questions about the project as well as donation inquiries should go to 517-335-1477 or emailed to Librarian@Michigan.gov.
Be sure to also visit the Yearbooks at the Library of Michigan page on the library's website. It includes a growing directory of digitized yearbooks that have been made available online through local projects by Michigan libraries and historical organizations.

Library of Michigan at the 2024 National Book Festival
Special Collections Manager David Votta and Digitization Librarian Jennifer Sasota travelled to Washington D.C. last weekend to represent both the Library of Michigan, Michigan Center for the Book, and the state of Michigan at the 2024 National Book Festival. The National Book Festival is an annual event sponsored by the Library of Congress that celebrates literature and reading, featuring author talks, book signings, and various activities for book lovers of all ages. The event took place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Saturday, August 24.
Michigan Poet Laureate Nandi Comer also attended the event as well as Michigan Notable Books author Dan Charnas. Dan's 2023 Michigan Notable Book Dilla time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm is adult selection for the Michigan titles on the Great Reads from Great Places list. The youth selection for Michigan is Shapes, Lines and Light : My Grandfather's American Journey by Katie Yamasaki. Find recordings and other content on the National Book Festival website.

Final Call: Michigan Author Award Event on September 7
Come join us in celebrating the 2023-2024 Michigan Author Award Recipient Anne-Marie Oomen at a reception at the Library of Michigan on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 6PM-8PM. Event includes food/refreshments in the Library of Michigan's Lake Erie Room (2nd floor) with comments by State Librarian Randy Riley and Author Anne-Marie Oomen. The event is free to attend, but registration is required Visit Michigan.gov/MCFB for more details and registration information.
