Social media is a big part of everyday life, so it’s important to take simple steps to protect your personal information from scams or identity theft. Being careful about what you share can help keep your details safe. The National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) recommends several ways to stay safe on social media:
-
Limit how much personal information you share including your location, birthday or daily routines.
-
Review and update your privacy settings regularly to control who can see your information.
-
Turn off unnecessary app permissions like camera, microphone, location and contact syncing unless needed.
-
Use multi factor authentication to add an extra layer of security to your accounts.
-
Create strong and unique passwords for each account and avoid reusing them.
-
Be cautious about posts and messages since content shared online can be saved or shared by others.
-
Only accept friend or connection requests from people you know and trust.
-
Review your current followers and connections to remove any suspicious accounts.
-
Avoid clicking on links or downloading files from unknown or suspicious messages.
-
Be alert for phishing attempts in messages or posts even if they appear to come from someone you know.
-
Block and report users who engage in suspicious or harmful behavior.
