Identity theft happens when someone uses your personal or financial information without your permission. This can include your name, Social Security number, bank account details, credit card numbers or health insurance information. A thief may use this information to make purchases, open new accounts, steal your tax refund or get medical care in your name.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) offers the following warning signs that can help you spot identity theft early:
-
Bank withdrawals you do not recognize
-
Bills or mail that stop arriving
-
Debt collection calls for accounts you did not open
-
Charges and accounts you do not recognize on your credit report
-
Medical bills for services you did not use
-
Notices about tax activity you did not initiate
Acting quickly when you see these signs can help reduce their impact and prevent further misuse of your information.
For more information, prevention tips and help if you are a victim of identity theft, visit the FTC identity theft website.
