The State Land Bank Authority was created in 2004 through bipartisan legislation to give communities a tool for addressing vacant, abandoned, and tax-foreclosed properties.
At its core, the State Land Bank helps turn properties that once dragged down neighborhoods into productive spaces that support the community and the local tax base.
We’re proud to see real progress and more properties back on the tax rolls. Watch the video to learn more about how the State Land Bank is helping strengthen our local economies.
-
Why it exists: To address vacant and foreclosed properties in Michigan.
-
How it works: The State Land Bank holds, manages and redevelops properties while supporting local land banks with funding, guidance and resources.
-
Who’s involved: Today, 52 counties and 3 cities in Michigan have their own local land banks, working alongside us to serve their communities.
|
Vacant and tax-foreclosed properties can:
- Lower nearby property values
- Create safety concerns
- Reduce tax revenue for local governments
Land banks turn those problems into opportunities by:
- Supporting new housing development
- Attracting business investment
- Returning properties to the tax rolls
- Improving the overall quality of life in neighborhoods
-
Blight Elimination: Invested $150 million statewide to demolish or remediate abandoned properties over the last two years.
-
Redevelopment Projects: Transformed former prison sites into a new Meijer store and a planned 250-unit housing development.
-
Partnerships: Partnered with a land conservancy to redevelop 9 acres of Northern Michigan waterfront with direct input from local residents.
Michigan is a leader in land banking. But it’s not alone, across the country, 18 states and Puerto Rico have adopted land bank legislation, recognizing this as one of the most effective tools for returning neglected properties to productive use.
|
Every property brought back to life means:
- More housing options for families
- Safer and stronger neighborhoods
- Increased tax revenue to fund schools, roads, and local services
The State Land Bank Authority isn’t just about land. It’s about building stronger communities and better futures for the people of Michigan.
