New Michigan Industrial Ventilation Conference Course

Michigan IVC Ventilation Pic

The Michigan Industrial Ventilation Conference will offer a new four-day course of instruction February 6-10, 2023. The Industrial Ventilation for Non-engineers (IVNE) course has been designed with industrial hygienists as well as facilities and maintenance for personnel in mind; those that typically are not responsible for the design of the industrial ventilation systems. Unlike the design-based course of instruction offered by the MIVC, more than 40% of the IVNE course will use a collection of demonstrations and hands-on labs to exhibit the principles discussed in various seminars; the design-based courses predominately solve various industrial ventilation design problems presented in their classrooms.

To register for the IVNE course, visit: https://www.michiganivc.org/index.php/register

OSHA Highlights MIOSHA On-Site Success Story

In 2021, MIOSHA On-Site Consultation made a marketing visit to a small west Michigan business that fabricates stone (e.g., granite and marble) counters with saws, CNC machines, and polishing tools. The products are made for both residential and commercial customers. The reason for the visit was based on the likelihood of silica exposures and the OSHA/MIOSHA silica emphasis program. Following explanation of the On-Site Consultation Program, the employer agreed to an initial hazard survey consultation. (full story)

Michigan Worker Deaths of 2023

There have been 2 work-related fatalities reported to MIOSHA in 2023. The information below shares preliminary details about the most recent fatalities reported to MIOSHA, which are believed to be covered by the MIOSH Act. The descriptions reflect information provided to MIOSHA at the initial report of the incidents and are not the result of the official MIOSHA investigations.

Preliminary summaries of the most recent 2023 incidents:

A 57-year-old truck driver was making a delivery in a concrete truck which became stuck at the jobsite. A contractor used a bulldozer with a tow cable to pull the concrete truck out. The hitch pin on the bulldozer failed causing the tow cable to whip through the windshield of the concrete truck fatally striking the victim.

A 54-year-old truck driver was kneeling over a single-piece rim wheel and tire assembly that was lying flat on the ground. While inflating the tire, the sidewall burst, and the assembly shot up fatally striking the victim.

Every life is precious. Our mutual goal must be that every employee goes home at the end of every shift unharmed.
