Each year, the president of the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) presents the organization's President's Award to an individual who has had a significant impact on the president's career. This year’s award was given to State Land Bank Authority (SLBA) Development Director Jim Tischler at the Annual MAP Conference on Mackinac Island.
MAP President Carmine Avantini praised Jim and his support as both colleague and mentor. Among his many talents, Jim has been generous in imparting his extensive knowledge of creative tax increment financing over the years, which has led to development support and implementation in communities across Michigan.
“The SLBA, as well as the State of Michigan, is lucky to have Jim leading us forward in new and innovative development planning strategies," said Emily Doerr, SLBA director. "Our staff has learned so much from Jim, and his passion continues to be critical in driving the SLBA's mission and vision."
Jim has been a leader in planning and economic development in Michigan for many years. His work in both the public and private sectors has helped bridge the gap between traditional planning and the real estate development field, finding innovative ways to finance quality projects while creating livable urban environments.
Never content to just sit back and wait for plans to be implemented, Jim has aggressively advocated the use of public funding as a way to bridge the gap with project funding. His efforts have included the development of mixed-use projects, public-private partnerships, urban and small-town revitalization and the creation of innovative housing finance tools, amongst others.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity to have worked with President Avantini over the years and have greatly benefited from his wisdom and leadership," said SLBA Development Director Jim Tischler. "I look forward to continuing to work alongside my talented SLBA team, and all of our partners, in revitalizing communities and creating positive economic impact all across Michigan."
