Women’s Equality Day commemorates the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution granting women the right to vote. But why stop at voting? Why not run for elected office yourself?
Join us live at 11 a.m. this Friday, Aug. 26, for Women’s Equality Day: Vote, Then Run, featuring:
- Special message from Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson
- Presentation about Michigan’s elected offices and what you can run for
- Panel discussion with Detroit City Council Member Gabriela Santiago-Romero, Grand Rapids Community College Trustee Brandy Lovelady Mitchell and former Village of Sparta President Kristi Dougan talking about their own journeys into public service.

Oakland County Circuit Judge Jacob Cunningham recently entered a preliminary injunction against enforcement of Michigan’s extreme 1931 abortion law, which bans abortion without exception for rape or incest and criminalizes nurses and doctors for doing their jobs.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer remains vigilant in protecting reproductive freedom for all Michiganders, including filing a lawsuit asking the Michigan Supreme Court to determine if abortion is constitutionally protected in Michigan.
“While we wait for the Supreme Court to rule, I will continue using every tool in my toolbox to fight like hell for women and health care providers,” said Gov. Whitmer.

MI Tri-Share Child Care is an innovative bipartisan program introduced by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and managed by the Michigan Women’s Commission to make child care more affordable for more families and to help employers retain and attract employees.
Through MI Tri-Share, the cost of an employee's child care is shared equally among the employer, the employee and the State of Michigan — a three-way split — with coordination being provided regionally by a MI Tri-Share facilitator hub.
Check out our new MI Tri-Share website, including current facilitator hub regions and participating employers, at Michigan.gov/Tri-Share.
