Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency honored for work in Highland Park

By Lee Watson

Authority Health is committed to preserving public health and promoting population health through the collective impact of its partners in the community. To that end, on Friday, December 7, 2018, six Health Net awards were presented by Authority Health.

“Each year, Authority Health highlights the individuals and organizations that are making a difference in improving health for vulnerable populations in our region, “says Allen. “This year, we are pleased to have identified some of the strongest awardees in the history of the Best of the HealthNet Award.”

Among those awarded was Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency (accepted by Jerome Drain and Anne Zobel) for their work with Highland Park’s Cortland Community Impact Center - 138 Cortland St, Highland Park, MI 48203.

Also honored was Claudia Sanford of United Community Housing Coalition, Cindy Eggleton of Brilliant Detroit, and Dr. Elliott Attisha of Detroit Public School District. Not in attendance was Mittie Hatcher of The Salvation Army Bed & Bread Truck, and Denise Holmes former chair of Authority Health GME Teaching Health Center Consortium and former director of the Michigan Medicaid program.

Since 2011, the Health Net awards salutes those who demonstrate extraordinary support for the Authority Heath mission of improving population health of residents of the City of Detroit and Wayne County by assuring access to care.

Smoke Alarms Saves Lives:

A working smoke alarm is critical for the early detection of a fire in your home and could mean the difference between life and death. Fires can occur in a variety of ways and in any room of your home. But no matter where or how, having a working smoke alarm is the first key step toward your family’s safety. The Highland Park Fire Department is determined to help protect families in Highland Park and, through our Prevention Program, we are able to provide detectors. We will inspect, test and install smoke detectors. For more information and to schedule a free inspection, please call the Highland Park Fire Department at 313-852-3068.

Hero Recognition:

Highland Park Fire Fighters, Lt Stewart Jackson, FEO Marcus Vaughn, TFF Brandon McDonald, and TFF Jeff Hosking are being recognized for their service at 13179 Mackay in Detroit, Michigan. Thank you for your heroism.

Pay Increase and Hiring New Officers:

We have taken a hard look at how we can increase HPPD salaries, while at the same time operate within the approved budget. A better-paid PD is a must if we are to continue to move the City forward. After considerable time and effort, a plan has been developed that will allow for a forty percent raise over the length of a three-year contract. By granting the first pay raise in eleven years, we will be able to attract a higher caliber candidate for Police Officer. We anticipate that in the very near future we will be able to hire as many as twenty new Officers.

A message from the Human Resource Department:

Congratulations:

  • James Ture was promoted to Corporal on September 15, 2018
  • Cameron Fegreus was promoted to Corporal on December 18, 2018
  • India Smith graduated from the Police Academy on December 14, 2018. Ms. Smith is crossed trained with Police and Fire Services.
  •  Lt. Jamille Edwards retired with 30 years of service from the city of Highland Park on December 31, 2018

NOW HIRING!

  • The Highland Park Police Department is hiring part-time Police Officers.
  • The Highland Park Fire Department is hiring part-time Fire Fighters.
