ICYMI

  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined local entrepreneurs and business leaders to unveil the Michigan Economic Jumpstart Plan, which would allocate a portion of the federal relief funding to support and invest in working people and small businesses in Michigan. Under the governor’s plan, the state will increase incentives to boost wages to attract applicants, provide grants to small businesses to ramp up hiring, and expand access to childcare for families with young children who want to return to work but cannot.

“As we continue to take steps to jumpstart our economy, we need to have a real conversation about putting Michigan back to work with better jobs and bigger paychecks,” Governor Whitmer said. “Under the Michigan Economic Jumpstart plan, we can harness these once-in-a-lifetime economic opportunities and channel it to raise wages, invest in small businesses, and uplift families. I look forward to engaging the legislature, local communities, and Michiganders as we continue thinking through the best ways to use the federal funds and state surplus to turbocharge our economy and make a real difference in people’s lives.”

  • Governor Whitmer signed Senate Bill 49, which will enable small distillers, wine makers, and microbreweries to have an on-premise and off-premise tasting room permit, helping our small businesses grow and supporting the economy.

Michigan is home to some of the best microbreweries and craft distillers in the country, and this bill make it easier for these businesses to create and operate tasting rooms," saidGovernor Whitmer. "I’m proud that this bipartisan bill will make it more convenient for Michiganders to sample fine spirits and delicious micro-brews, while also creating jobs and helping grow our small businesses and economy faster."

  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to announce that Mission Design and Automation, a leading provider of automation solutions, is expanding in Holland Charter Township with support from the Michigan Strategic Fund.

Mission Design’s investment in Holland will create good-paying jobs and help us continue our economic recovery as we emerge from the pandemic,” said Governor Whitmer. “This expansion in Holland cements Mission Design’s presence in West Michigan and adds momentum to our efforts to ensure Michigan’s incredible manufacturers lead the way in Industry 4.0 technologies and workforce needs. Our future is bright, and thanks to companies like Mission Design, I know we can build back our state’s economy stronger than ever before.”

  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Thursday that U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo is awarding $1.5 million in CARES Act Recovery Assistance grants from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) to help the state of Michigan respond to the coronavirus.

As we continue putting Michigan back to work, this $1.5 million grant will stimulate our economy and create good-paying jobs,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “Michigan is grateful to Biden Administration and Secretary Raimondo at the Department of Commerce for investing in our local communities and helping us build back better from the pandemic.”

  • MDHHS announced 510 cases of COVID-19 from yesterday. This brings the total number of positive cases of COVID-19 to 889,511.

HAPPENING ACROSS STATE GOVERNMENT

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and GetSetUp are partnering to offer classes to improve brain health during June, which is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. The MDHHS Aging & Adult Services Agency has a partnership with GetSetUp, a mission-driven education technology company dedicated to creating economic and learning opportunities for older adults. The partnership provides free virtual learning and social engagement opportunities for Michiganders ages 60 and over.

"Dementia - including Alzheimer's disease, which is the most common form - is an emerging public health crisis," said Dr. Alexis Travis, who recently became senior deputy director for the MDHHS Public Health Administration and previously was senior deputy director of the Aging and Adult Services Agency. "An estimated 190,000 Michiganders age 65 and over are living with Alzheimer's disease. That number is expected to grow to 220,000 by 2025. Brain health is a crucial component of healthy aging and we are pleased to offer these and over 150 classes on the GetSetUp platform to older Michiganders at no cost."

  • A successful acquisition of an Upper Peninsula electric company has resulted in additional benefits for thousands of customers after Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel intervened. At a meeting last week, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved a settlement that allowed Axium UP Holding (Axium) to acquire ownership of the Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO).

"With all acquisitions, it is important we ensure consumer protections are front and center," Nessel said. "I'm proud of the work my team did alongside the involved parties to obtain this added relief and benefits for UPPCO customers."
