  • Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced yesterday her funding priorities for K-12 education as the state readies for major investments in our schools and teachers. Due to the American Rescue Plan and the recently announced state revenue increases, a surplus in funding now exists to make unprecedented investments in our schools, with enough funding to eliminate the funding gap that has existed between schools for many years.

Right now, we have an unprecedented opportunity to help each and every student recover academically, mentally, and physically,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “As we emerge from the pandemic and begin our economic recovery, we must work together to provide equitable school funding, attract and retain top talent, facilitate post-secondary transitions, and build stronger, safer schools. With the resources we have available to us thanks to federal aid and a state surplus, we can making lasting, transformative investments in our kids and schools that will have positive impacts for generations.”

  • Gov. Gretchen Whitmer visited the I-75/M-46 construction project in Saginaw to discuss her Rebuilding Michigan plan to rebuild state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The I-75/M-46 construction project addresses a key interchange in Saginaw near the Nexteer Automotive Plant, making it more efficient for Nexteer to transport goods as they work to support thousands of jobs in the area.

By rebuilding Michigan’s roads and bridges, we are investing in our infrastructure, economy and safety for years to come,” said Governor Whitmer. “This project will benefit all who travel on I-75, keeping families safe and helping our small businesses transport goods. This investment will help create jobs, get our economy back on track, and make Michigan a national leader in infrastructure.”

  • MDHHS announced 542 cases of COVID-19 from yesterday. This brings the total number of positive cases of COVID-19 to 886,660.

HAPPENING ACROSS STATE GOVERNMENT

  • Taking advantage of new subsidies to make health insurance more affordable, nearly 22,000 Michiganders and 940,000 Americans have signed up for health insurance on HealthCare.gov during the special enrollment period that the Biden Administration opened up earlier this year.

"Building back better means addressing underlying issues that have been exposed and exacerbated by the pandemic, including lack of access to high-quality, affordable health insurance,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “As a result of the special enrollment period and the American Rescue Plan, more than 21,000 Michigan families have already signed up for Marketplace health coverage. We will continue to work with our federal, state, and local partners to ensure that every Michigander has access to the coverage they need for themselves and their families.”

  • The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) awarded more than $1.8 million in Neighborhood Enhancement Program (NEP) grants to 43 local governments and nonprofit groups across Michigan to launch projects directly tied to improving and stabilizing communities. Projects will focus mainly on housing repairs and upgrades while some also will include neighborhood public amenity enhancements.

"As MSHDA works to support the improvement and stabilization of Michigan's neighborhoods, we are pleased to award this latest round of grants to local groups across the state as they help their communities through the completion of high-impact projects aimed at improving the quality of life for residents," said Tonya Young, Neighborhood Enhancement Team manager.
