  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed April as “Financial Literacy Month” in Michigan, and the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is promoting tools to help Michiganders at every stage of life follow sound personal financial practices to improve their financial wellness on a day-to-day basis and during challenging times.

“The financial challenges resulting from the pandemic have affected Michiganders in many ways, and we must ensure they have the tools and support they need,” said Governor Whitmer. “The financial wellness of our families is critical not only to the well-being of our people, but also to the state as a whole. Michigan remains focused on fostering a strong economic recovery as we get more Michiganders vaccinated and build back better from this pandemic.”

In addition to numerous publications and videos on its website, DIFS posts helpful financial content on Twitter and Facebook, and will be promoting daily virtual events during Money Smart Week April 10-17.

DIFS is also hosting free educational events throughout the month, including an April 14 virtual town hall on health insurance basics, and an April 21 virtual town hall on Michigan’s new auto insurance law.

“Financial literacy encompasses understanding not only how to manage your money, but also understanding your insurance coverage that protects such things as your home, property, and health,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “The Health Insurance Marketplace special enrollment period is open, and Michigan’s new auto insurance law gives drivers new choices to save on their coverage. We want consumers to understand these important opportunities so they can make the best decisions for their needs and budget.”

  • MDHHS announced 10,293 cases of COVID-19 from Sunday and Monday. This brings the total number of positive cases of COVID-19 to 702,499.
