ICYMI
- Yesterday, Governor Whitmer and Chief Medical Executive and MDHHS Chief Deputy for Health Dr. Joneigh Khaldun provided an update on COVID-19 in Michigan. The governor reinforced her call to the legislature asking that they join forces to fight COVID-19.
Last week, Governor Whitmer sent a letter to the Michigan legislature asking them to pass a $100 million MI COVID Relief plan and pass a permanent extension of unemployment benefits.

- Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex to be lowered to half-staff today, December 2, 2020, to honor the life and service of former state Senator Tom Casperson.
“Tom Casperson was an unwavering public servant, who made sure Yoopers always felt like their voices were being heard in our state Capitol at every point during the legislative process,” said Governor Whitmer. “While our politics varied, Tom proved that it was still possible to find common ground and work together to do right by the people of Michigan.
- Governor Gretchen Whitmer recognized the millions of individuals whose lives have been impacted or taken by HIV/AIDS by proclaiming yesterday as AIDS Day in Michigan.
“Today Michigan joins together with people across the globe to show solidarity for the millions of people living with HIV and to raise awareness for the fight against this devastating virus,” said Governor Whitmer. “This year we have been reminded of the impact a virus can have on our families and friends, and of the disproportionate impact it can have on marginalized communities. As we recognize today as AIDS Day, we must continue to push to make improvements to both our health care systems and inequities that exist in this country.”
Also, as part of World AIDS Day, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has launched a statewide campaign encouraging Michiganders to be aware of the statistics surrounding HIV in Michigan.
- MDHHS announced 5,793 cases of COVID-19 from yesterday. This brings the total number of positive cases of COVID-19 to 366,242.
HAPPENING ACROSS STATE GOVERNMENT
- MDHHS will continue to provide nutritious food by the truckload to Flint residents throughout December. MDHHS has provided the Flint mobile food pantries since February 2016 in partnership with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan in Flint. This month’s mobile food pantry distribution will have plenty of delicious, vitamin-rich produce and proteins.
- The MiSTEM Network has partnered with Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) and Eastern Michigan University (EMU) to offer a unique opportunity for students to take college-level GIS courses. These classes provide hands-on experiences and problem-solving abilities that give high school students the skills and certifications needed for entry level positions in the emerging field of Geospatial Technologies.
“The MiSTEM Network works to ensure that students all across Michigan have access to inspiring STEM learning opportunities that not only spark creativity but help them cultivate skills for the jobs of tomorrow,” said Megan Schrauben, Executive Director of the MiSTEM Network. “These are the partnerships we hope to model and grow so students gain the necessary skills to explore career options, and employers can find the qualified STEM talent they need to fill critical job openings across our state.”
