UPDATE
- On the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Equality Day, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced in a video statement that the Michigan Women’s Commission (MWC) will move from the Department of Civil Rights to the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO). Placing the Women’s Commission in LEO will enhance the capacity of both bodies to address the economic issues Michigan women face every day.
“From day one of my administration, I have made a commitment to building a stronger, more equitable state. And we can't call Michigan a home for opportunity unless Michigan women are afforded the same opportunities to be successful,” said Governor Whitmer. “After speaking with women across the state, it’s clear that the economic issues we face, including pay equity, available and affordable childcare, paid parental leave, and the need for more women in leadership roles, can best be addressed when the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and the Michigan Women’s Commission work directly together. When this group of leaders work together, we can help ensure women across Michigan are treated with the same dignity and respect as their male counterparts, no matter their race, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation.”
- As Commander-in-Chief of the Michigan National Guard, Governor Whitmer addressed the 3rd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment before deploying to Kosovo. She was joined by Adjutant General of the Michigan National Guard Major General Paul Rogers to thank each of them for their bravery and service to both Michigan and the United States.
“I am honored to be back in Grand Ledge today with the soldiers and family members of the 3rd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment as they deploy in support of peacekeeping operations in Kosovo. I am humbled at their commitment to the security of this nation, and I recognize the sacrifices that they and their families will be facing over the coming months,” said Governor Whitmer. “The Michigan National Guard has continued to be an important part of our state’s response to COVID-19. As fellow service members continue to provide critical assistance like community testing and food distribution, the dual-mission of the Michigan National Guard is on display today, as our dedicated guardsmen and women prepare to deploy to Kosovo to help provide a safe and secure environment in the region.”

- The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced 761 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday. This brings the total number of positive cases of COVID-19 to 99,200.
HAPPENING ACROSS STATE GOVERNMENT
- Yesterday, the Michigan Public Service Commission and MDHHS urged customers to be proactive in seeking help if they find themselves unable to pay their energy bills and to not wait to receive a shut off notice or are almost out of propane or fuel oil.
As the COVID-19 pandemic and economic downturn continue and as the winter heating season approaches, many Michiganders may find themselves needing assistance for the first time. Assistance is available through both your energy provider and the State Emergency Relief (SER) program and the Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP).
- This week, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) sat down with Representative Leslie Love to talk about her passion and commitment she brought to honoring Aretha Franklin with a memorial highway designation on M-10 (Lodge Freeway) in Detroit. Rep. Love recounts the challenges moving the legislation to formalize the memorial designation for the highway and why this was personal for her on MDOT’s podcast “Talking Transportation."
