Northwestern Michigan College is seeking candidates for its Department of Labor-approved apprenticeship program in marine technology, the only one in the nation with a focus on remotely-operated and autonomous underwater vehicles. NMC will provide the classroom training from classes in the marine technology bachelor of science curriculum.
The program’s goal is to develop graduates ready to perform applied technical work in this industry sector. This includes the calibration, deployment, operation, maintenance, and management of marine technology assets, including data collection, processing and mapping, for use in the marine environment both offshore and onshore. “Our goal is to produce graduates that are workforce ready with a strong background in the technical fundamentals,” said Ed Bailey, director of NMC’s Technical Division.
The college’s existing strong ties to the marine industry make the apprenticeship program an excellent opportunity for an already-employed candidate to acquire additional training. Apprenticeships typically require 500 hours of classroom time and 2,000-6,000 hours of on-the-job training. After completion of an apprenticeship program, the apprentice earns a nationally recognized credential from the Department of Labor that is portable and stackable. Additionally, an apprentice, along with earning a paycheck throughout the apprenticeship, is also elevated to journeyworker status that may lead to increased pay and upward career opportunities.
Registration for spring semester 2017 classes is going on now. Classes begin January 13, 2017. An additional ten-week ROV pilot training opportunity begins in March. Candidates can also immediately begin documenting the work experience portion and begin classes later. • marine technology • Northwestern Michigan College • Northwestern Michigan
Grand Rapids Community College announced that it has joined the network of Fiat Chrysler-certified technical training sites. FCA US LLC, a North American automaker headquartered in Auburn Hills, established the Mopar Career Automotive Program LOCAL in partnership with the National Coalition of Certification Centers, or NC3, to train approximately 1,000 students annually. The partnership has a goal of building a talent pipeline of certified Chrysler Fiat automotive technicians across the country.
The program was launched last summer and intends to establish 100 certified colleges by 2018.Mopar CAP LOCAL prepares people to work as Level 1 Technicians upon graduation from certified two-year training institutions. Steven C. Ender, GRCC president, said the new partnership is an “exciting development” for the college’s automotive technician program.“This is another way for GRCC to meet the needs of business and industry leaders in our region and in our state,” he said.
Bill Pink, vice president and dean of the School of Workforce Development at GRCC, said the partnership will provide students with skills that are “in demand.” GRCC said the partnership makes it the first community college in the state to have this level of partnership with Fiat Chrysler.
Mopar CAP Local
Plans for the Mopar CAP LOCAL program call for launching 20 additional education sites in 2016, said John Fox, director of dealer training at FCA US. He said the partnership with NC3 is making “great progress” in expanding Fiat Chrysler’s “geographic footprint of training sites” by identifying and certifying colleges nationwide that have highly qualified automotive programs. The Mopar CAP LOCAL program was launched in 30 schools in its first year, and more than 9,500 Level 0 and Level 1 training modules already have been completed.
Mopar CAP LOCAL is an extension of FCA's traditional Mopar CAP program that has been training service technicians to work in the Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram Truck dealerships since 1984. The traditional Mopar CAP has 31 colleges training service technicians primarily in metropolitan areas of the country. The Mopar CAP LOCAL program is enlisting schools in secondary and rural markets, as well. “The Mopar CAP LOCAL program has quickly become one of the most important and effective workforce development projects in many years,” said Roger Tadajewski, executive director of NC3. He said the pipeline of technician talent heading to local dealerships is well underway across the nation.
NC3
NC3 certifies each Mopar CAP LOCAL school to ensure that it meets the “stringent requirements” necessary for success. NC3 is a network of education providers and corporations that supports, advances and validates new and emerging technology skills in the transportation, aviation and energy industry sectors. NC3 develops, implements and sustains industry-recognized portable certifications built on national skill standards. FCA US is a member of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. family of companies.
