I-69 Rebuilding Michigan Project Update
June 2, 2021
Work to rebuild I-69 from north of Ainger Road to Island Highway officially started March 1. Both northbound and southbound I-69 will be rebuilt in 2021, including the interchange ramps at Cochran Road and M-50. Work will continue on northbound I-69 while maintaining traffic in the southbound lanes. When the northbound lanes are done, work will immediately start on the southbound lanes.
Project Progress Last Month:
I-69 Roadwork:
- Completed grading, underdrain placement, new subbase, and aggregate base from north of Stine Road to Cochran Road.
- Completed paving on the left lane from M-50 to Island Highway.
- Completed pavement removal, grading, and underdrain and subbase placement on the right lane between M-50 and Island Highway.
- Paving asphalt base course is ongoing between Cochran Road and M-50.
- Completed remaining subbase placement, aggregate base course and asphalt paving on the northbound I-69 exit ramp at Cochran Road.
- Completed underdrain placement, new subbase, aggrege base course, and asphalt paving on the Cochran Road entrance ramp to northbound I-69.
- Started underdrain placement and subbase on the M-50 entrance ramp to northbound I-69.
- Completed remaining storm sewer and culvert crossing work.
- Restoration work is ongoing throughout the project.
Bridge Work:
- Completed curing concrete overlay, guardrail, and approach pavement work on N Drive over I-69.
- Completed hydro demolition, concrete overlay, guardrail and approach work on Baseline Highway over I-69.
- Completed expansion joint replacement, deck patching, and pin and hanger work on J Drive over I-69.
- Completed expansion joint replacement, deck patching, and hydro demolition work on northbound I-69 over Stine Road.
Project Expectations Next Month:
I-69 Roadwork
- Asphalt base course will be completed from north of Ainger Road to M-50.
- Aggregate base and asphalt base course placement will be completed on the right lane between M-50 and Island Highway.
- Asphalt leveling course will be placed after the base course.
- Complete rebuilding of the northbound I-69 exit and entrance ramps at M-50, including pavement removal, earthwork grading, underdrain placement, subbase, aggregate base course, and asphalt paving.
Bridge Work:
- Complete hydro demolition, concrete overlay, guardrail, and approach work on J Drive over I-69.
- Pour concrete overlay and approaches on northbound I-69 over Stine Road.
- Perform joint replacement, pin and hanger replacement, and hydro demolition work on Garfield Road over I-69.
How Will Traffic Be Affected?
- One lane will be open in each direction on I-69 via crossovers.
- The northbound I-69 exit ramp at M-50 will be closed and detoured for rebuilding.
- Close and detour of J Drive and Baseline Highway over I-69.
- Close and detour of Garfield Road over I-69 upon completion of Baseline Highway over I-69.
- One lane will be open in each direction with temporary traffic signals for Stine Road under I-69.
General Project Information:
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing $210 million to rebuild I-69 from south of I-94 in Marshall, Calhoun County, to Island Highway in Charlotte, Eaton County. The project is part of the Rebuilding Michigan Plan and will include rebuilding 25 miles of I-69, rebuilding six interchanges, rebuilding the 15 Mile Road bridge over I-94, repairing 26 bridges, and making drainage and safety improvements. In addition, crews will repave the Turkeyville Rest Area and carpool lot, as well as the Potterville Rest Area. The project will continue in 2022 and 2023.
