I-94 Project Update

June 3, 2019 – Last week, the contractor began pouring the concrete bridge barrier wall on the new eastbound I-94 bridge over the Grand River. The contractor also completed placing lightweight fill behind the abutment wall for the new Cooper St. bridge and placed the beams for the first span of this structure. Additionally, the contractor continued removing the existing median on I-94 from Sargent to Elm.

Work on the new eastbound I-94 bridge over the Grand River continues. Crews will also continue work on the new bridge deck for the Cooper Street bridge.

This week, crews will continue reconstructing the Cooper street interchange. The contractor will continue placing embankment, placing storm sewer, and begin paving the hot mix asphalt base course within the closure limits of the Cooper Street interchange. Additionally, the contractor will be placing a concrete spun pole for the future ITS camera. Crews will also continue the removal of the existing median and begin the reconstruction of the I-94 median from Sargent to Elm.

Daytime shoulder closures and reduced speed zones along I-94 between M-60 and Sargent Road will remain in place to delineate the work zone. Cooper Street over I-94 remains closed until October and the eastbound I-94 Cooper Street on and off ramps remain closed until early July.

When Cooper street reopens the interchange layout will be significantly different. The new interchange layout will consist of two new roundabouts. To provide more information on roundabouts a link to the Roundabout Information located on MDOT’s website will provide answers to questions about roundabouts and how to safely navigate one.
