In August, Newberry Correctional Facility Nurse Manager Krista Vanatta presented Licensed Practical Nurse Sandra Davis with her 10-year service pin.
We join Nurse Manager Vanatta and Warden Bauman in thanking LPN Davis for her years of service to the State of Michigan and the MDOC.
It is with a heavy heart that we share with you today that Gus Harrison Correctional Facility Qualified Mental Health Professional Christopher Davis has passed away. QMHP Davis started his career at ARF in September of 2012. Warden Campbell described him as, "passionate and committed to his work. He was kind caring and a great listener. He will truly be missed"

We are also sad to share with you today that Jackson Regional Maintenance Physical Plant Manager Jay Hath passed away this morning. Manager Hath worked his entire MDOC career in regional maintenance. Manager Hath will be missed.

We join Warden Braman and Assistant Deputy Warden Stewart in congratulating RN Shelly Taylor for being selected as Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility Employee of the Month for January. In her nomination, RN Taylor was described as, "Knowledgeable, efficient, and always shows professionalism with a smile on her face. She is patient, positive and encouraging when training new staff. Ms. Taylor never complains when given a task outside her comfort zone and is always willing to accept the challenge. Ms. Taylor is a true asset to MTU."

Earlier today the University of Cincinnati Corrections Institute announced the passing of their Director, Dr. Edward J. Latessa, on January 11, after a long and fierce battle with cancer.
Dr. Latessa helped move Evidence-Based Criminal Justice forward over the last couple of decades and trained MDOC staff at an FOA supervisors Conference several years ago.

Proceeds from the sale of the calendars goes to the MDOC Employee Engagement Fund, which supports events for MDOC employees, as well as donations to employees and their families who have experienced tragedy or loss. No state funds were used in the printing of the calendars.

*Today's daily case count represents new referrals of confirmed cases to the MDSS since the last web update report. Over the two days (Tuesday and Wednesday), the average number of new confirmed cases is 14,229 per day.
**Regular reviews of death certificate data maintained in Vital Records reporting systems are conducted by MDHHS staff two times per week. As a part of this process, records that identify COVID-19 infection as a contributing factor to death are compared against all laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS). If a death certificate is matched to a confirmed COVID-19 case and that record in the MDSS does not indicate the individual died, the MDSS record is updated to indicate the death and the appropriate local health department is notified. These matched deaths are then included with mortality information posted to the Michigan Coronavirus website. As a result of the most recent assessment, today's data includes 282 additional deaths identified by this methodology.
