With this message, the Office of the Great Lakes is debuting its new look on e-mail as we join our longtime partners at the Department of Natural Resources. With the DNR, we will continue our essential work to support healthy Michigan water resources and communities, and explore opportunities to contribute in new and positive ways. In the future, readers can expect to see a few changes as we update our website and begin telling our story through Twitter on our own OGL page.

It was an exciting year for the Office of the Great Lakes. Our office provided more than $1 million in grant funding and technical assistance to Great Lakes communities to protect and restore their water resources. The Areas of Concern Program removed five major water resource impairments, resulting in healthier waters for people and the environment. The Coastal Program delved into work highlighting the importance of coastal dunes, water trails and clean beaches, setting its focus on developing resiliency strategies in our state’s unique coastal communities.

The Office of the Great Lakes was a leading partner in convening the first Great Lakes Islands Summit. It supported Michigan Water Strategy goals to ensure clean and safe drinking water for all Michiganders by working with partners to revitalize the real-time water monitoring system in the Huron-to-Erie Corridor.

In 2018, the Office of the Great Lakes will continue its exciting foray into supporting Great Lakes autonomous vessel research, expand opportunities for people to enjoy Michigan water trails, and celebrate 40 years of positive impact by Michigan’s Coastal Management Program. A partnership of key players including the OGL will offer the Water Heritage Project, connecting communities to their water resources alongside the Smithsonian’s Water/Ways exhibit.

This work could not and cannot be accomplished without the support and collaboration of our partner organizations at the federal, state and local levels. We believe that love for the Great Lakes and Michigan’s waters is a force that unites us to act for a better future.

Best wishes from everyone at the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes for a joyful holiday season. We’re looking forward to working together in 2018.
