Governor Whitmer proclaims May 31 - June 6 State Veterans Homes Recognition Week in Michigan, recognizing long and storied history
We've had lots to celebrate recently, as mid-May saw National Skilled Nursing Home Week, where we had all kinds of fun things happening, like military trivia, food trucks, sundae bars, and more, while also celebrating the five-year anniversary of MVH at Chesterfield Twp. opening its doors to veterans.
Notably, we were also thrilled that Governor Whitmer again proclaimed May 31-June 6, 2026 as 'State Veterans Homes Recognition Week' here in Michigan. We've been doing this work here a long time, as the cornerstone for the first State Veterans Home in Michigan was placed on June 3, 1886 in Grand Rapids - on the same campus we still care for veterans on today. In the years following Civil War, states began to see a need in their communities to care for those that bore the burden of America's bloodiest war. The first State Veterans Home opened in Connecticut in 1864, and then others began popping up around the nation. Today, there are 3 State Veterans Homes here in Michigan, and 176 State Veterans Homes across the country: at least one in each State, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
We're proud to serve those who've served us, with the care and quality of life they earned, and deserve.

Construction continues on new Jacobetti in Marquette Twp.
Having broke ground on the Jacobetti replacement in May 2025, construction continues, and is anticipated to go on for another 18-24 months on the $96+ million investment in veterans of the Upper Peninsula. The new home is set to have 108 private bed/bath rooms, split up into eighteen rooms on each of the six 'households,' which all connect to a larger community center.
As work continues with excavating and pouring foundations, shallow plumbing, and other progress, conversation started many months ago on the future disposition of the existing Jacobetti building - the former St. Mary's Hospital. Even before securing federal funding for the Jacobetti replacement, MVH has been well aware that Marquette doesn't need an old hospital building to sit vacant. Upon vacating the existing Jacobetti, the building will revert back into the State's building inventory, managed by the MI Dept. of Technology, Management, & Budget (DTMB). MVH has had and continues to have dialogue with DTMB's Real Estate Division, as well as local Marquette leadership regarding potential opportunities for the existing building's future disposition. While MVH will not necessarily be the decision-maker in the site's future disposition, we're working diligently with stakeholders in hopes that the site's future can already be determined upon MVH D.J. Jacobetti's exit from the existing building/site in just a couple short years. We'll see. However things shake out, we're excited for what lies ahead with the new Jacobetti building, and this incredible investment for U.P. veterans and their loved ones.

Community remembers the fallen, teaches the cost of freedom at GR
On the Wednesday before Memorial Day, scouts, veterans, and community members gathered at the cemetery at MVH at Grand Rapids to honor and remember those no longer with us, pay tribute to those that made the ultimate sacrifice, and to teach the cost of freedom to the next generation of Americans.
Following a community cookout generously sponsored by our friends at the UPS Veterans Business Resource Group, the crowd walked across the bridge, listened to remarks, and then placed thousands of flags at the individual headstones of the veterans that make the cemetery their final resting place. The event concluded with Amazing Grace, followed by Taps on the bagpipes.
Service and sacrifice matter. Lest we forget.

Quality of life is important - and very present - at MVH
Needing the services of a skilled nursing facility shouldn't mean the end of independence, and it certainly does not mean that at MVH. With outings, events, and plentiful other activities, we often hear from family members that their veteran is more active and social here than they were at home!
Just one (of many) example of that is the forthcoming 'Stars at Stripes Makers Market' at MVH at Grand Rapids on June 5th, from 3pm-7pm, in the home's back parking lot off Lamberton. We'll have crafty crafters sharing their skills - selling their goods - with any interested. Many of our veterans love good, homemade crafts, and will surely be perusing the plentiful provisions.
We hope you can stop by the parking lot to check out the goods!
Remembering and honoring the fallen, at MVH D.J. Jacobetti
Every year, the observance of Memorial Day at Michigan Veteran Homes locations is a special one. Each home observes Memorial Day differently, while recognizing it is a time to honor those that gave their lives in service to our nation.
This year, our generous friends at American Legion Post 44 in Marquette delivered the onsite service at the Jacobetti to ensure those at the home could have a special opportunity to honor and remember those no longer with us. Check out some of the photos here: (1) Today, American Legion... - Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti | Facebook.
Finally, while Memorial Day 2026 is behind us, it should be noted that none of us need an official holiday to pay tribute to - and to remember - those brave warriors who died in service to our nation, and to honor and support the loved ones they left behind. We can all do that each and every day we choose.
