June 2025
On May 23rd, community gathered in Marquette Charter Township to ceremonially break ground on the new MVH D.J. Jacobetti. Joining the momentous occasion were veterans of the Jacobetti, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Congressman Jack Bergman, Senator Ed McBroom, Rep. Karl Bohnak, Marquette Charter Twp Supervisor Lyn Durant, members of the Michigan Veterans' Facility Authority Board of Directors, DMVA and MVH leadership, staff, volunteers, and friends of the Jacobetti, and so many other community members and supporters.
The future looks bright for veteran long-term care. We're grateful for the many advocates and champions who've made this vision a reality. Stay tuned to our website and social media for updates on the journey!
On Saturday morning, June 7th, join MVH at Chesterfield Township veterans, staff, volunteers, families, and a broad range of community members and supporters for the Home's annual Walk, Run & Roll event, held onsite at MVH at Chesterfield Twp, benefitting the Charitable Support Fund of the Home. The morning includes a 1/2-Mile Remembrance Walk/Roll alongside our veterans, and is followed by a timed 5k. The morning concludes with a hot dog lunch.
MVH at Chesterfield Twp. Administrator, Jennifer Manning stated, "Our members - these veterans - they served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and in so many other places, in both peace, and in conflict. This event is about them. It's about connecting the broader community to our veterans for a morning of fun, activity, and appreciation. They're not forgotten, and they're members of this community and this nation that they stood to serve. We're fortunate to be able to host this event, and grateful to be able to invite the community in to join us."
It's going to be a great morning. Join MVH at Chesterfield Township.
Carbohydrate loading ("carb loading") is a strategy often employed by professional athletes to increase the glycogen stored in their muscles prior to longer endurance events or competitions. However, you don't need to be a professional athlete to join Jacobetti veterans, staff, volunteers, and community members to carb load at pancake breakfast, celebrate service, and share in gratitude and camaraderie for those who've served.

At MVH, we believe we can do more with and alongside our communities. A recent example of that belief in partnership culminated in late May with the ceremonial ribbon cutting of the Chesterfield Township Veterans Community Pathway project, onsite at MVH at Chesterfield Township. The Veterans Community Pathway is now open to the public daily, from dawn to dusk. The public-use space for walking and enjoying time in nature is the result of a discussion more than a year ago between leaders at MVH and leaders at Chesterfield Township to determine how MVH's adjacent land can be used in such a way to benefit the veterans we serve, along with the broader community who love and support our members.
We're grateful for the partnership we have with the team at Chesterfield Township, and are excited for this beautiful new project!
On May 16th, MVH at Grand Rapids members attended the tenth annual Armed Forces Thanksgiving event in downtown Grand Rapids. The event occurs every May, and raises awareness and dialogue on the contributions our military personnel have made - and continue to make - on behalf of their families, friends, and country. It connects high schoolers from across West Michigan to military, veterans, and first responders for lunch, conversation, and understanding, while raising money for the West Michigan Veterans Coalition and the great work they do in the veteran community across the region.
The Armed Forces Thanksgiving, West Michigan Veterans Coalition, and event sponsors always include MVH veterans, and for that, we're incredibly grateful. Another great year with Armed Forces Thanksgiving!
We've got so much to be thankful for at Michigan Veteran Homes. At each of our Homes, community members, families, groups, and organizations reach out and impact our veterans' lives with their time, their talents, their treasures, their ties and relationships, and their testimony - as they often share our mission and impact with their friends.
It's seemingly impossible to capture the 'good' that occurs in our homes every single day. We try, but frankly, we fall short. Nonetheless, the month of May was another incredible month of giving at MVH - to our mission, and to our members. We want to express our gratitude for the so many people and organizations that believe serving those who've served us, is important, and worthwhile.
From all of us at MVH: THANK YOU. Your generosity is being put to good use for the lives of our veterans.
Memorial Day is honored differently at each of our Homes. Indeed, just like each one of us that has lost friends or family in service to our nation finds our own unique way to honor their sacrifice, so too do our Homes uniquely remember the fallen. At MVH at Grand Rapids, for years now, community has come together to place flags at the headstone of each interred veteran on our campus on the Wednesday before Memorial Day. This year marked another year of honoring and remembering. The event, in partnership with Scouts of America and UPS Grand Rapids Veteran Resource Group, was again one to remember. Rain did not deter the dedicated from coming out to honor the fallen, and remember their sacrifice.
We're grateful for our communities. We're grateful for our veterans. And we're grateful for those brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.
