MVH and What's Ahead
There's always something going on at Michigan Veteran Homes. The months and year(s) ahead are no exception. We've built and opened a new maintenance warehouse at MVH at Chesterfield Twp, we're knee-deep into building an addition of office and support services space at MVH at Grand Rapids, and we remain optimistic on breaking ground on the replacement MVH D.J. Jacobetti in spring/summer 2025. And that's just some of the bigger "brick & mortar" work, ensuring viable infrastructure. We're continuing to strengthen and embed daily processes that ensure the delivery of high-quality, veteran-centered care. We're continuously and meticulously scrutinizing cost, advancing financial sustainability and ensuring we're being responsible stewards of the investment in our mission, and our members. We're cultivating a workplace of choice that attracts, retains, and grows the best talent, and we're expanding community awareness and philanthropic support of our work. Indeed, our mission is a partnership with our members, their families, our staff, contractors, volunteers, donors, community partners, and others. Our veterans served all of us, and now we're there - as a community - to serve them.
There are a few ways to stay connected to and informed about MVH and our work:
We're excited about 2025, and what lies ahead for Michigan Veteran Homes. With our supporters, we impacting veteran lives for the better.
Nursing homes, sadly, often have a stigma associated with them. It's a stigma we've worked to eradicate at MVH. Needing skilled care does NOT mean an end to independence, or a reduction in quality of life. At MVH, in fact, it's quite the opposite. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional care, along with the quality of life veterans earned, and deserve.
Movie trips. Carnival games and activities. Live music. Shopping trips. Sporting events out in town. Museums. Card tournaments. Board games. Parties. Art. Discussion. Storytelling. Cooking. You name it, we do it, at Michigan Veteran Homes. But we don't - and can't - do it alone. We do it alongside and in partnership with our many volunteers, donors, and community partners who believe, like us, that serving those who served us matters.
It's private giving that allows us to do more for those we serve. If you're interested in volunteering, or making a tax-deductible donation to MVH's Charitable Support Fund, you can read more at the link below. To all who support our mission: we're incredibly grateful. Our veterans deserve nothing but the best, and thanks to you, we're able to provide it.
Parties. Bingo. The Lions. Food. Music. Friendship. And more.
At Michigan Veteran Homes, we find all kinds of reasons to get together, build community, have fun, and celebrate. Afterall, quality of life is pretty darn important. In January, MVH D.J. Jacobetti members and staff - amongst many other activities - celebrated and wished a very happy birthday to the late King of Rock & Roll, Mr. Elvis Presley. Jacobetti veterans donned dark glasses, some remarkable sideburns, watched an Elvis movie, and shared memories of the King's rise to fame a number of decades ago.
The fun activities like this that we're able to fund and provide - it all happens because community members believe in and give generously to our work. For that, we're grateful. Monetary donations to MVH are deposited in our Charitable Support Fund, separate from operational funds, and are approved to expend by our Board of Directors to benefit the lives of members of our homes. To all of our supporters: THANK YOU. We do more for veterans, thanks to those who support us.
Veterans in long-term care sometimes have challenges with long-range travel. Thanks to virtual reality at MVH, we're able to take veterans all over the world. Some of our veterans are going to Tahiti, while others are trying skiing in Banff. In addition to far off lands, the technology also allows them to go back to the street they grew up on, or to take in Mardi Gras, new restaurants, and more. Our friends at the Macomb Daily recently visited our veterans at MVH at Chesterfield Township, and wrote about the impact that virtual reality technology is having on the lives of our veterans in long-term care. You can read the article here: VR helps veterans at Chesterfield facility see the world – Macomb Daily.
If you're interested in supporting and enriching the lives of veterans in later in life and end of life care, consider supporting Michigan Veteran Homes. Whether you're an individual, or part of a group, foundation, corporation, or otherwise - there's an opportunity to impact the lives of those who served us, at Michigan Veteran Homes.
We're fortunate at Michigan Veteran Homes to have so many incredible people caring for our members. We truly have remarkable people, caring for remarkable people. And while our team doesn't do the work for the "thank you's," it's so inspiring to see the acts of recognition of appreciation in action. MVH at Grand Rapids Registered Nurse Bette Barker was recently nominated by one of her teammates for the "Pay it Forward Spotlight" on West Michigan's Fox 17 News, and she was selected. Bette has been serving veterans at MVH for more than two decades, and this recognition came as a wonderful surprise. Watch and read the story at the link below. At MVH, we're proud of our team and the impact they have on veterans, and our communities. And we're grateful to have such remarkable people caring for our veterans.
At Michigan Veteran Homes, we change lives for the better. Every day. Whether warmly welcoming a new admission into one of our homes, providing skilled and compassionate care, running an enjoyable activity for our veterans, holding a hand in the final moments, or one of countless other actions our team undertakes with pride in service to our veterans, we change lives for the better in late in life and end of life care. Our veterans deserve it, and we're there for them. And a not-so-secret secret: we have fun doing it, also.
If you've ever questioned whether or not the work you're doing every day is making a positive impact on people's lives, you might consider a career with MVH. Our team members certainly don't have that problem. Our careers page can be found at the link below, while a number of contracted service providers have opportunities directly supporting the MVH mission every day as well, like housekeeping, certified nursing assistants, dining services, therapy services, and more. Reach out to us to be referred to those organizations, where applicable. We're all one team, serving those men and women who've served us.
