The National Academies Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Disasters and Emergencies is seeking experts to participate in an upcoming workshop that will examine strategies, policies, and innovative actions to improve the resilience of health care and public health critical infrastructure to impacts from disasters and other emergencies. Approximately 8-10 volunteer experts are needed to serve on the workshop planning committee. Expertise in the following areas is desired:
- Healthcare operations and management
- Public health, emergency management, and environmental health
- IT, data science, and cybersecurity
- Infrastructure systems, engineering, and supply chain
- Risk assessment and mitigation
- Insurances, cost management, and health economics
- Community resilience and lived experience
- Public policy

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) has released a new Communications Planning Guide to aid local health departments in crafting effective communication strategies. This resource supports professionals regardless of their staff size, experience, or organizational priorities. The guide offers a basic framework and essential questions for developing robust communication strategies.
Created by members of NACCHO’s Public Health Communications Workgroup (2023-2024), the guide is designed to enhance public health communication efforts. Local health departments can use this tool to improve outreach and engagement with their communities.
NACCHO, in partnership with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), recently released a new chemical preparedness handbook for local health departments. The handbook is designed to assist local health departments in developing effective public health preparedness and response plans for low-probability, high-risk chemical incidents. This new resource contains information on chemical incident planning and mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. It also contains several planning checklists with recommended steps and actions local health departments should consider when developing preparedness plans tailored to their communities.
