Data Spotlight: Blastomycosis and Histoplasmosis
Blastomycosis
Blastomycosis is a fungal disease. People get blastomycosis by breathing in spores from the fungus, Blastomyces when they disturb infected soil or other decomposing matter (e.g., leaves, wood). This can occur when sweeping, raking, digging, etc. The fungus lives most often in states surrounding the Great Lakes.
Histoplasmosis
Histoplasmosis is a fungal disease. People can get histoplasmosis by breathing in spores from the fungus, Histoplasma. Histoplasma spores are released after contaminated soil or other organic matter is disturbed, especially around large amounts of bird and/or bat droppings. Some central and eastern states including Michigan have the fungus.
