The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), are pleased to announce two separate offerings of its Animal/Plant Health Joint Criminal Epidemiological Investigations Course in May 2024. This two-day training workshop aims to expand on the concepts and operational tools for:
- Joint law enforcement and animal-plant health agency investigational techniques
- Agricultural threat and intelligence briefings
- Application of operational case studies and field scenarios
- The concepts of information sharing, joint interview, and hazardous materials (CBRN) crime scene investigations
- Red Cell exercises.
This course, which addresses the specific threats to animal-plant health and the pre-harvest phases of agricultural production, is based on the existing Public Health Criminal-Epidemiological Investigations Course developed and implemented by the FBI and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) more than a decade ago.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is happy to announce two offerings of the CDC’s Public Health Decision Making in a Radiation Emergency course. This course is focused on preparing participants to anticipate decisions that will need to be made, and to support decision makers who will guide public health needs, in a radiation emergency. Specifically, this course:
- Highlights the role of Emergency Support Functions (ESFs) #8 and #6 as they relate to key tasks,
- Identifies which public health and medical functional areas (e.g., clinical care, epidemiology, communication) to provide such support,
- Generates discussion around the key decisions that participants will need to be ready to explain/support, and
- Identifies reference materials and tools that participants can use to reinforce their advice/decisions.
The target audience for this course includes professionals from across all sectors who are expected to take on decision-making roles in a radiation emergency, or to support those who do. Participants should already have a basic level of knowledge about radiation emergency preparedness and response. Please contact Jason Smith (smithj20@michigan.gov) if you’ve any questions.
