Hello Immunization Partners,
Please share this information with providers in your jurisdiction.
We wanted to alert you of a recent enhancement to the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR) that is now flagging adolescents who may need an additional dose of Tdap based on Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations. MCIR is now using an updated forecasting engine, specifically an immunization calculation engine (ICE), to identify those individuals who need this additional Tdap dose.
This enhancement will identify adolescents who:
- are 11 through 12 years of age as of 1/1/2023
- received Tdap between age 7 thru 9 years of age, and
- still haven’t received the recommended adolescent dose of Tdap at age 11-12 years
And adolescents who:
- are 13 through 18 years of age as of 1/1/2023
- received Tdap at 7 thru 9 years of age, and
- did not receive any additional Tdap at any point on or after their 11thbirthday
Guidance from the CDC adolescent catch up schedule recommends that if Tdap is administered at age 7–10 years:
- Children age 7–9 years who receive Tdap should receive the routine Tdap dose at age 11–12 years
- Children age 10 years who receive Tdap do not need the routine Tdap dose at age 11–12 years
Further, if DTaP is inadvertently administered on or after age 7 years:
- Children age 7–9 years: DTaP may count as part of catch-up series. Administer routine Tdap dose at age 11–12 years.
- Children age 10–18 years: Count dose of DTaP as the adolescent Tdap booster.
An example of what this will now look like in MCIR is shown below:

We encourage you to check MCIR at every clinical encounter to ensure that these adolescents get caught back up on all ACIP recommended vaccines, including Tdap.
Thank you for all that you do to protect Michiganders from vaccine-preventable diseases.
