DEPR has determined the issue with hyperlinks in the "PHEP Update" is being caused by the State of Michigan’s anti-virus and security systems. The links are being physically altered when a state employee types them into a Microsoft Office product (e.g., an email) so that they pass through the State’s security server to determine if they are safe. Because this is a state system, those who are not state employees cannot access the security server and the links cannot be opened. With this issue of the PHEP Update DEPR is implementing a work around for this problem. Please let Jim Koval know if the links work or not.
The next regularly scheduled PHEP Partners Call will be on June 8 at 1:30 pm (ET). A draft agenda is available.
The North American Active Assailant Conference (NAAAC) is the largest event in the world dedicated to improving emergency response to active violence and considered by many past attendees to be the most informative and powerful training they've ever attended. The 6th annual conference will be held June 7-9, 2023, in Troy, MI. Click here to register.
The Federal Emergency Management System’s (FEMA’s) National Integration Center is seeking public feedback on nine public health resource typing definitions. This 30-day national engagement period will conclude at 5:00 p.m. (EDT) on June 8, 2023. These resource typing documents enhance the interoperability and effectiveness of mutual aid by establishing baseline qualifications for National Incident Management System-typed teams. This facilitates the sharing of deployable resources at all jurisdictional levels. National engagement provides an opportunity to comment on the draft documents to ensure they are relevant to all implementing partners. Learn more and submit feedback.

NACCHO, in partnership with Deloitte Consulting LLP, has released two administrative preparedness resources: the Situation Report Template and the Emergency Staffing Plan Template. The Emergency Staffing Plan Template is a tool to help develop a preparedness plan for rapid staffing during emergencies or disasters, and the Situation Report Template is for public health officials to use as they identify and circulate relevant information during disasters caused by natural, man-made, and technological hazards.
HHS emPOWER now features five new combinations of data to help communities plan for disaster. The emergency planning dataset includes de-identified totals by type of electricity-dependent durable medical equipment (DME) and certain cardiac implantable devices, as well as four additional essential healthcare services. These include facility-based dialysis, home oxygen tank services, home health care services, and at-home hospice services. Public health authorities and their partners, as appropriate, can use this data to develop and enhance emergency systems, plans, and processes to support community-based at-risk populations, and to support data-driven decision-making regarding potential shelter and evacuation assistance needs, response asset, resource allocation, and power restoration prioritization. To learn more about the emPOWER dataset, visit the HHS emPOWER Program - Emergency Response Outreach Dataset webpage.
Wastewater-based disease surveillance was a useful tool for monitoring and anticipating incidence of COVID-19 over the past three years. How can the technology be used to inform public health during future disease outbreaks? The National Academies has a new digital resource available that explores the science behind wastewater surveillance, how it was used during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how it could be used to monitor and anticipate future disease outbreaks. Adapted from the 2023 report, Wastewater-based Disease Surveillance for Public Health Action, this interactive webpage is accessible to individuals that might just be learning about wastewater surveillance, while also containing a wealth of information for experts and researchers. Explore the interactive webpage. The 2023 report was the outcome of a study commissioned by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO).
At the recently concluded National Preparedness Summit, a workshop on risk communication in public health emergencies highlighted how disasters like COVID-19, Mpox, and the Ohio train derailment have affected the public’s ability to trust messaging from the government. The problem in turn, has created a practical and professional challenge for local health officials to continue with their preparedness response work and health education campaigns. This blog highlights the experiences of preparedness officials in the room along with helpful tips and resources for local governments to turn to in similar situations.
